Hello,
We are concerned about our little 3 pound Yorkie. Pancakes is 5 months old and just recently he been a little constipated.

Last night he didn't eat hardly any food and he didn't go potty. He is still very active, runing around, having fun, being his regular self other then not going potty...he tried but nothing came out!

We went and got some 100% pumpkin and feed him that last night, about a tbsp worth and when we woke up there was a little bit of poop in his litter box but not much to say it was relieving for him!

No poop again this morning but he ate his breakfast, is drinking his water and is still super active and excited.

Has anyone had this problem, how long before it should be a vet concern?

Again, no whining, no discomfort, no vomiting, no laziness, no bloating, no food change, (we did give him a Merrick's raw hide that is the only diet difference and that was about a week ago)...no poop!

Please let me know your thoughts!

Keep giving him the pumpkin a teaspoon twice a day.

If there is no vomiting, and he acts normal I wouldn't worry about it. Vomiting with constipation can mean an intestinal obstruction and should always be taken very seriously. I do want to tell you that there were days when I thought Joey didn't poop either, and then I would find a little nugget three week later behind the potted plants. :D

Sadie went one day without pooping and worried us a little bit, but the next day she pooped twice and continues her one or two poops a day routine...

keep trying the pumpkin as stated above. she's bound to go sooner or later and if it's too long like a couple more days and she doesn't call the vet

How familiar that story is! :D

OP -- I would definately keep adding the pumpkin for a few days. If you really feel like constipation is a problem (see him straining often without results, for example) I might call the vets office. But if you can get past it on a little pumpkin it is so much better than having to resort to meds.

I have to tell you I love that name! Pancakes -- very original and cute! Is there a story behind the name?

We are fist time dog owners, so we may be over worried and anxious! We will keep going with the pumpkin and hopefully he can squeeze one through soon!

I appreciate all your stories and suggestions, it great to know that there's others out there goign through the same thing!

Hee Hee...glad you like Pancakes name! No story with it though...we just htought it was cute :)

Do you know what treaments that Vet will suggest? We are hoping that there is isn't anything invasive or surgical involved?

I read that sometimes they performe an enima and that helps?

They may give him a warm water enema, administered based on his weight. The the other option is pure glycerine administered with an eye dropper. It's all dependent on how bad he's backed up.

I think that mineral oils works too... I recall giving Ace a lil when he was constipated and it worked fine...He wouldnt eat the pumpkin. Crazy dog...i know most like it.

We have trip planned, leaving tomorrow and of course Pancakes get all backed up!!! We are so worried because we fly out tomorrow and our little guy will be at his DayCare for the next week. The Daycare is awesome, we have put him in there before so we trust them but it makes us nervous because we will be away for 9 days and we don't want to come home to a sick puppy and an outragious vet bill!

Your best bet is to get him to the vet, to get him back on the right track, lickety split.....

Until you can get to your vet.....We had a constipated puppy and I freaked out and rushed him to the vet. Our vet suggested we try prune juice. We gave about 5 or 6 drop's to the constipated pup morning afternoon and night until a poop is produced. It worked wonderfully. The good thing with prune juice is it is a natural remedy not a medicine. It should not hurt the pup if constipation isnt the problem.
