Jackson has kennel cough! I took Jackson to the vet today and she's pretty positive he has kennel cough. :( She gave me some antibiotics to give him for 2 weeks that will hopefully clear it up. He's been gagging and coughing for 5 days now. I was away in NYC for 4 days and came back and my dad told me he had been doing this a lot. So, I took him in and she's 99% sure it's NOT tracheal collapse, thank God. Originally, I just thought he maybe had something in his throat. He was up from 4-5am coughing/gagging this morning. I felt so bad for him (and I'm tired as can be!) Anyone else ever dealt with kennel cough? |
Our pom had it when we first got him. I really think he came from a puppy mill but that is water under the bridge. Our vet also gave him some thing to take to calm the cough. He was over it in about a week. But he was pitiful. |
Buddy and I are sending Jackson get well wishes.:getwellso How did he pick up kennel cough? |

He was around a Golden Retriever at my dad's house the day before I left for vacation and they live in the "country" where all the dogs kind of just wander the neighborhood, so maybe it was one of their dogs, who knows what they pick up. And Jackson never had the bordatella vaccination, my dad's dogs did. He's not that bad during the day, he usually does the coughing/gagging/choking noises early in the AM and late at night! |
I have no idea how long it takes for KC to appear so perhaps the doggy park was the culpult. I don't get Buddy the Bordadella shot either now that he get's groomed by me and is never boarded. You can't prevent things like this I guess. Hope Jackson responds to the meds fast so you both can get a good night's sleep tonight. |

The antibiotic is a preventative against pneumonia developing. It will not "cure" kennel cough. Sometimes a vet may prescribe a cough suppressant, but most often it's allowed to run it's course. Taking him into a steam filled bathroom or using a warm mist vaporizer with vick's will help a great deal. A teaspoon of honey soothes an irritate throat. As a side note - bordatello is largely ineffective as a preventative. |
Poor Jackson. :( I sure hope he feels better and gets some rest (you, too!). |
Aww. Poor baby :(:(. Ralphie had this when he was a puppy and it ripped my heart out every time I heard him cough. It sounds like they are choking and it just sounds so terrible and painful. My vet prescribed Clavamox. I also put a vaporizer near him when he was in his crate at night. Really the only thing that you can do is wait it out. 7-14 days and it should clear up. Good luck, I know it is no fun playing the waiting game. Hugs and kisses for your sweet little boy :getwellso:getwellso:getwellso |
=( Poor jackson! I hope he gets better soon!! :getwellso I wish there was like a chicken soup for dogs when they are under the weather..but that would just be silly!! Hang in there..he will overcome it! :aimeeyork:nursing: |
