Strange question about dog hair in my new apartment I just rented an apartment and signed the lease. I did a walk through of the apartment prior to signing and everything looked ok. But after dropping something on the carpet I noticed it was collecting hairs. I looked harder and saw all these black dog hairs in the carpet. They are hard to see but they are all over...if I put a white piece of paper on the carpet and kick onto it, it gets hair on it! Also, if you look between the carpet and wall you can see them stuck there. I have told them and delayed my move in and they said they would take care of it. So they cleaned it again with 'pet treatment' but I just went in to check again and they are still there. They are less but still there! My dog Stella is 3.5 months old and I do not want her to be sniffing another dog's hairs (and I totally think it is gross). Am I over-reacting?? I am freaking out and refuse to move in until all the hair is gone. They probably think that I am being a pain but I cant help it. Please tell me if I should demand a new carpet or is a little bit of dog hair normal on a carpet?? Am I over-reacting or is this something legit to freak over? Thanks for any opinions! |
I would not want to move in to it like that. They need to get a professional cleaner in there. Good luck! |
Girl, I'm the same darn way! I'm getting ready to move into a house that had 2 Pitbulls previously and I have horrid allergies. I think I've almost killed the carpet because I've vacuumed it and the base boards so much. I'm also having the carpets cleaned on Thursday and then I'll probably vacuum 3 or 4 more times before I actually move in. Could you go vacuum it yourself so you know you're doing a good job and maybe that will give you a better piece of mind? |

I agree. I would insist on a professional cleaning. Take a lint roller with with you to make sure they have removed all the dog hair. I would also take a "stink finder" (black light) with me to make sure the carpet hasn't been urinated on. Urine seeps into the pad and the smell will attract your dog. |
From a property management standpoint, if you've already signed the lease there isn't much you can do about it. You can try and demand new carpet, but they don't have to comply if the carpet doesn't make the unit uninhabitable, and PA law doesn't allow you to withold the rent in this instance, even if you refuse to move in. Removing dog/cat hair is hard, but I think after a few times running a vaccuum you won't be able to notice it. |
Thank you all for your responses! I feel better knowing others feel the same way. Some people were telling me I was over-reacting and the fact that I have a dog means I should understand dog hair is no big deal. I don’t feel that way at all. Dog hair gets everywhere and it’s not my dog’s hairs so why should I clean it up? I think the black light is a good idea. I will try to find one today at petsmart. Since I am at work my mom is meeting the apt complex today to talk about it. I have used sticky tape to see if the hair was up and it is still there. They have 'cleaned' the rugs twice and it just hasn’t worked. If worse comes to worse I will get them cleaned myself professionally and then vacuum vacuum vacuum. I am just so surprised a complex does not have ways to get it up. We pay almost $700 extra per year to have a dog so they should use that money to make sure it is clean. I am so skeeved out! I will not move my stuff in there till I am sure it is clean. Thanks again! |
