Learned my lesson... I was getting low on dog food, so hubbie suggested we give them a pouch of Pedigree. Ok, that was friday night. Saturday, I thought I'd be a nice mommy and let them have some Beneful (our lab eats this). They both had a nice helping. Of course, I come home to diarreha. So, sunday morning I run out and get their food (nutro Ultra). Sunday, no problem. Monday morning, they get a Beneful treat (don't EVER buy those). Now I have to clean up bright green diarreha. Moses cannot tolerate any change to diet, I know that, but forgot. Now I am dealing with the mess. Serves me right. I know Beneful is not a good food, but husband won't let me change Homer's (the lab's) food. The treats come free in the big bag of food. They have so much dye in them, they color their poop whichever color the treat is. Peapods, bright green, carrots, orange, tomatoes, bright red. Never, never, never again. |
Eeewwww... sounds messy! That's interesting about Beneful; I've never used it, but thought it was supposed to be a fairly good food. Glad I saw your post! |

We used to feed our lab beneful..yet changed when we got wee Ted. The difference in Wallace's coat is amazing. He used to have course dry hair that fell out a lot..nice and soft and shiny now. And he used to itch like crazy. None of that since we took him off Beneful. The bag looks so nutritious and healthy. I had no clue how bad it was until I had to feed a little dog and discovered there really is a difference in dog food. |
Those foods are all really crappy! I didn't know either until I got Jackson and started researching foods. Beneful is terrible! I made this thread after Jackson ate Beneful.... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-him-sick.html Nutro has been blamed on the sickness and death of MANY dogs and I personally stay away from it. I would suggest Wellness, Merrick's, Natural Balance, Innova, Taste of the Wild, etc. Any Pet Valu store is going to sell good food. Petco now has some great foods as well. Certain brands are definitely better than grocery brands (Pedigree, Kibbles n Bits, Beneful, etc) though, if you're looking to keep costs low, Avoderm isn't that bad and you can find it at Petsmart and I believe it's a bit cheaper as well as By Nature. |
Yes I have had an experience very similar to yours when I ran out of Bens food and got a bag of Beneful. Never EVER again! He was sick for about 4 days, diarrhea everywhere (it was like someone turned a faucet on, not kidding). He was vomiting and everything. I had to make him chicken and rice to try and calm his stomach, he is very sensitive to what he eats and I have to be careful. So Beneful is a no go around here! |
Well, Moses is back to normal now. Firm stools, and on his Ultra. My little girl, Izzy, has a cast-iron stomach, so it didn't affect her. I would love to change Homer's food, but as I said, he is hubby's dog and he won't let me. Now Homer loves the little dogs food as much as they love his. So whenever he gets a chance, he chows down on their bowl. You'd think that would send a message, but no... |
Beneful, Pedigree and all the other pet foods sold in the grocery store are terrible foods. They are made from the waste of the human food industry, the not-fit-for-human-consumption by-products. Every pet owner should read this article from the Animal Protection Institute: What’s Really in Pet Food |
There is a very helpful grading chart on this forum another YT member did and its very enlightening and helpful!!!! I used eukannuba until I saw it was given a 76/c??? I always thought that was good food........:confused:We are now going raw! |

It is worth buying the more expensive food. They will have a consistant diet and will eat less as it is full or nutrition meaning they will poop less and it is way more healthy ;) Think about it int he end they it actualy doesnt cost more because they eat less of it! |
