But cleaning it does not cause it to need to be emptied more often. XOXO |

FYI, Thor's former owner used to have it done, and now I don't. I specifically ask the groomer not to do it. Thor does not seem to need it, and I figure, if you don't need a finger in your butt, then don't ask for one. ;) Thor seems to do fine on his own, I believe that most dogs do not need this as long as they have good poops that put regular pressure on the sacs. So I would recommend against doing it unless it seems necessary (like, your dog is dragging his butt on the floor), but if you do it, don't worry that it will set you up for a lifetime of rectal invasion. Also keep in mind that butt dragging can be caused by worms. |
Most groomer's do not "stick the finger" to get it done as most of the time it just needs a little pressure from outside to help clean it up. Some dogs just get their own gland clean as they poop, like most large breeds. Some have a harder time emptying their own glands and need the help. If it gets to the point that it is inflamed and the dog is dragging the but around or you see redness and swelling it should get done at the vets as the vessels on the area are delicate and if one does not know what they are doing it can do more harm than good. Getting it clean does not cause it to need cleaning often. Some dogs have a one time episode and never will need to be at the vet to clean it again. Some never get done and are fine for life. Some people just bathe and groom their yorkies at home and never even know they have a gland to be expressed or cleaned and will never have a problem. I Also believe this is true" Thor seems to do fine on his own, I believe that most dogs do not need this as long as they have good poops that put regular pressure on the sacs." [COLOR="Black"] But i have seen dogs dogs with good poop that have needed it professionally cleaned. |

I take Bobby to get it done at the vets office. He is one that needs it done every month. He was fine his first year, but during his second year he would skoot his bottom. The groomer never expelled it, so I think some dogs just have a hard time expelling it themselves. I can tell when he needs it done because when he goes potty he will jump when the poo comes out and I can tell it hurts him, so off to the vet he goes. It cost $15. I don't mind paying that because I rather have a professional do it. Trixie on the other hand never gets it done and she is fine. |
Just a word to the wise..you can do a lot of harm if you do not do this right:( I have never had to do it to any of my dogs. |
I have the groomer do it  |
Sushi doesn't scoot, but he's been biting at his ALOT lately. Guess it's time to talk to the vet. |
Mmmm, i think i will keep visiting the vet for this.. |
Most of what I have read about this relating to yorkies, you have to be very careful and know what you are doing, especially with these little or you can rupture the gland. And I understand the surgery is extensive and expensive. You should at least have hands on instruction from your vet for the 1st time, then consider doing it yourself. Wouldn't want to hurt your little baby, let alone what the repair cost would be. |
Oh this thread is funny. It's really not bad. Just do the external method. No need to lub or probe..:) Some dogs need them done & some rarely don't. Here's a good link that explains it. I do it in the tub too. Be sure to hold the tail towards her head. It's hard to do them if you don't. The glands feel like tiny grapes. Sometimes you need to use warm soapy water there if you have trouble expressing them. Prior to pressing, find the glad, touch it so you're comfortable. It only takes a minute. Point butt away from you to do this. Don't stick anything inside her butt. If she's backed up, then she needs a doctor. You can do this. It's not bad or a big deal. I have the groomer do it, or when he goes to the vet. I use to be a vet tech and have done it...Its not fun :thumbdown esp when it gets on you!!! |

What about 'a carrot a day keeps the fingers away?' There has to be some sort of dietary thing that can act as a preventative......? |
Whoa...this discussion is making me dizzy............. |
I groom Emilio myself, but do take him to the groomer to have this done. She only charges me $5 and it takes her about 2 minutes. Let's just say it is the best $5 I ever spent!! He gets it done every 1-2 months. He is a little guy so he needs the help. |
hmmm Bear the 80lb rescue never needs it done... Baxter the maltipoo starts scooting every 6-8wks, right about grooming time, and I always have the groomer do it. So far the girls haven't had any issues. I've heard it pretty much depends on the quality of their poop as to whether or not they express themselves. Bear and Baxter eat the exact same food, so go figure. The modern dog diet is supposedly what has caused the anal glands to require so much of 'our' attention. Baxter has always jumped and ran right after he poops, I'd never associated it with pain though, I just thought it was a reaction like some dogs that scrape their feet after they pee. hmmm, I'll have to watch and see. I mean he does it every single time, even right after the groomers. |
