How can you "fatten" your pup up? So my Lola is about 6 lbs. She has longer legs and a pretty slender build so she looks "thin" to me anyways but she is perfectly fine. I was just wondering if theres a way to fatten her up a tad bit? I just want her to feel a little more meaty! I am going to be switching her food this week from what she is currently on. I didn't want to cause her any stress coming home so I decided to hold off on doing a switch right away. They had her on Purina Pro plan puppy. There's still alot left of it but I want to start mixing her into something new, something more healthy for her. I can tell she's been well taken care of but it just seems they didn't have all the facts about healthy choices, she came to me wearing a collar and she has been walked on one since being a baby. I went out and bought her a new harness and she walks fantasic on it, the lady said she pulled a bit on her collar but this harness is way better for her and she doesn't pull very much at all. I am going to be calling her old vet tomorrow and getting an estimate for a spay, since that's where she has been going I feel they know her best and I should continue going there. After a spay they gain alittle bit too correct? I would like to spay her some time in the next couple weeks. There is no signs that she has had a heat yet so I want to get the spay done before we have get one! :) |

Wow 2 lbs eh! That's a good increase. If it's possible for her to gain that much I will definitely wait and see what happens after a spay. |
Yep and shes not a big yorkie either. She was just 4 lbs when I had her spayed |
Ask your vet if she is a good weight or not. My Smokey is VERY slender but he's a healthy weight, it's just his body style. Then there is Chip that is short and round... not fat, just filled out. I would consult your vet and he/she can also give you tips on what you can or can't do, if they say she is a bit underweight. When Smokey came to us, he was extremely malnourished and I would free feed him and give him wet puppy food in the morning. He went from 7 lbs to 14 lbs (he's a teapot). |
I agree about waiting untill after her spay, both my girls gained at least 2pds after :p Now one of my boys is very thin but healthy, He eats well, Just dont gain weight and is thin :) Good luck with her spay :) |
It could just be his build..my chi free eats..is totally healthy but he just has a more slender built..and yes I agree most dogs put on weight after their spay..I think ur like me..u worry if they aren't a little more tubby lol |
I know I gained weight after my heat cycle came to a halt, lol |
I think being a "little" thin is probably healthier than being a "little" fat. Weight will come as she ages, in all probability, and neutering seems to affect this as well. How old is she? Puppies have lots more energy than adult dogs. |

I know she is a healthy size and weight, the vet was not worried about her size, it said she was normal weight and size! I guess I just like them a bit more tubby lol |
I would just wait and see after her spay! Good luck! How has she been adjusting? |

Great! I think she is just used to moving and being young still she has adjusted great. She is really comfortable with everyone. She just adores anyone she meets. She is really really friendly! But out on a walk she will bark at people and go into defense mode, it is too funny lol |
First let me congratulate you on your new baby!! I haven't been on as much and just saw this. I'm so happy for you that Lola has found you for her new forever home. Roxie is 2 1/2 and has been spayed since she was old enough to have it done. She's always been a very healthy lean yorkie. She's active and has a good appetite but still is pretty slender. She is 6 lbs. I'd wait and see what happens after her spay and changing food. That purina stuff is like junk food for dogs IMO. Having her on a high quality food will help her build good muscle tone as well as good health. Congratssssssssss again!! Lori and Roxie |
I would reconsider wanting to fatten her up at all. Lean dogs (as long as we aren't talking very underweight) tend to be healthier than heavy dogs. An extra pound on a Yorkie is about 1/7 their weight. That would be like us being 1/7 overweight. As long as the vet is happy, I wouldn't worry. |
I don't mean to steal your thunder here. But I worry about the same thing with my boy. He's a year and half, has longer legs, and weights 3.6 pounds. He is also neutered already He looks on the thin side and the vet says he is a tad bit underweight. I currently have both of my boys on Taste of the Wild but I don't know if I like it anymore, for reasons other than what is being discussed. I have been trying to order Blue Buffalo Wilderness because it is higher in calories and he is an active dog. Well I have been trying to order it for the last month and it is getting put on back order. And I have tried wet food but it gives his the runs. Is there anything else I can do? And I would wait til after she is spayed. Animals tend to gain after they are fixed. Good luck with the spay!:D |
