Wylie's mommy .... your Yorkie in your avatar is absolutely adorable!! I have wanted to tell you this for the longest time. I always enjoy looking at his picture when you post. He looks quite small, not sure if he was in the puppy stage when you took the picture but I just want to double check and clarify - you do give him chicken on the bone and it is safe? Anyone else who wants to chime in feel free. I need to know that it is safe for them. I can't get past what I have been told all my life about dogs eating bone. When I go out and eat steak from time to time I will order a T bone so that I can take the left over to my dogs but I always used to take the bone away when they were done. I know you did say not to give them bones that have been cooked. I am not sure where to draw the line on this although I will be checking out the additional posts that you provided. | Aw, thank you so much, that's very sweet and Marcel is loving it!! He is now 2yrs old, but in my avatar pic he was 22 weeks old (5 mths, 2 wks). He's still relatively small, but sturdy - his body "feels" really good. He now weighs about 3.3 lbs. I tried giving him raw bones and he just cannot, for the life of him, do anything with them. He has a very teensy mouth, and a vet even commented on this once - so I don't know if that's why or what. My Wylie can tear apart a raw bone, no problem - he's a very aggressive chewer (like lamb chops, chicken legs - "smaller" bones, not marrow bones).
For chewing, I generally use either bully sticks or CET chews (which we just started).
As for bones - some people are for them, some against (like everything, lol). I think it's important to read a lot about it and see if what feels comfortable. The whole idea of giving real bones to dogs is that they have almost the exact same digestive system as their ancestors - the wolf - so, theoretically they should do fine digesting bones, like the wolf does.
You'll read allll kinds of things all over the place regarding raw, and bones - probably one of the most unbiased "reads" for me is the following, and I think it's helpful: Feeding Bones To Wolves and Dogs |
