This may sound cheap BUT.......frontline I don't want to sound cheap but this is a question I have. My puppies are 4 pounds and the frontline is for up to 22 pounds. Do any of you dispense 1/2 and split it when you have two babies. It's not so much the expense of it but so much is waisted in their hair...yes I split it and dispense correctly. Also with the heartworm chewable....they are huge. I'm asking because I wouldn't want to do it and end up infested that is the worst!! Thanks! |
While most vets and Merial are going to tell you not to split the dose of Frontline, it is something I would do. The Heartgard chews cannot be split. The preventative is enjected into the chew and it could all end up in one side, so one dog would be getting all of it and the other dog, none. |
I split frontline as well.....I don't think it's good for them to have the whole dose. Recently I have purchased the frontline spray. I can put the appropriate amt. on my dogs. juliet |
I agree with you. If I had two small pups I too would spilt the dosage. Buddy is a bigger yorkie, 16lbs and I give him only 2/3 of the vial, throwing the rest away and I apply every 6wks instead of 4. My vet said not to do this but it's my dog and he dosen't have to know. Actually he uses another flea med that I won't use so you have to do what you think is right for your pups. I also stop using it from Nov-April giving his body a break. Never saw a flea on him and he's out everyday walking in the grass where many other dogs are walked. Try it you have nothing to loose and all to gain. $ |
I've been using the Frontline spray for about a year. It's easier to control the dose and it's a lot more economical! :) Before that, I did split the dose up with the Frontline Plus. |
My vet even suggested I split the dose. My dogs combined weight was 14 lbs. I still do for the 2 I have now. |
How does the frontline spray work?? Thanks so much for the advice. I put a full dose on each last week and felt yucky doing so...next month I will split it. I felt like I was poisoning them. FYI my sister gave her little tyke frontline this week (Carin Terrier 2 years) and she had a bad reaction and was hospitalized???? |
thanks for this post, i also had concerns about splitting the dosage. had asked my vet and was told no, but i too felt uncomfortable with an entire dosage, glad others had the same concern, |

I definately split my Frontline. I don't want to over-medicate. I have told my vet I do this and he thinks it is fine. I do not split the heartworm meds though, just in case the med is not evenly distributed. I get it in a small pill form though. Mine were taking a day or two of prodding to get the chewables down and I would have to keep track of which partially eaten chew was whose, so I bought the little pills. I can sneak them in much easier or just grind them and mix with a little peanut butter. So much easier. |
I've recently begun splitting the FrontLine also, but not the Heartworm medicine. Once in a while, when I am low on the Frontline, I have even split it three ways with my yorkies. |
