I’ve never heard of the term “Frito feet” before, but it is a sensible name for the syndrome if you ask me." I wouldn't describe the smell as pungent; in fact I love the smell. I wonder if she was talking about the same thing. I've never had a dog before that had this particular foot smell, and some who post here say they have had a breed of dog who shared the odor, but I forget which breed it was. I'm guessing this odor is more associated with Yorkies, or a few other breeds, rather than being associated with most breeds.

I dunno.
A family member's hound mix has Frito feet also. :)
There is even a Facebook group for it. lol

i didnt know what that was; my sister always tells me to wash ava's feet because they smell like popcorn; i never knew what she meant. can we apply anything to the feet to kill the fungus or bacteria?

Well, it got me yanking her up and smelling her feet lol...Much to my dismay, they smell like bully sticks ...But, she was chewing on one when my curiosity got the best of me...I don't think I've noticed her feet smelling like fritos, but then, to be honest, I have never had the inclination to smell her feet, before tonight :p

Guilty!:lol tears

Krystee 08-10-2009 08:23 PM

Okay, this is gonna drive me crazy... me and hubby smelled all 4 of our dogs feet and none smelled like fritos. LOL. Maybe a tiny bit on Charlie's but that's questionable...Tobie's feet still have a puppy smell about them... I couldn't smell anything on Jasmine's and Caz just had super stinky feet which made me remember that he needs a bath! LOL. I'm going to be obsessed until I can smell these frito feet everyone keeps talking about! :yelrotflm

mimimomo 08-10-2009 11:01 PM

I've noticed that the 'Fritos' smell emerges after Momo licks his feet. It can be a mixture of sweat (do dogs sweat?) & saliva. His feet are not dirty bc we always wash it w/oatmeal shampoo after coming in from outside.
I'm a groomer, so I think keeping the pad hairs trimmed is essential. It keeps dirt & stuff from sticking to it & its also more comfortable for the dog when they're walking on all fours. I have also noticed a peculiar smell on some dogs when blow-drying their paws. It's not the 'Fritos' or 'Popcorn' smell. Maybe that's the 'fungus' or 'yeast' smell.

Can you tanslate what they are then? I think Belle's and Tink's feet used to smell like biscuits....are frito's biscuits?
Edit: Fritos like Doritos (I googled)??? No, no cheesy feet here, we have some kind of baby rusk smell. Until she steps in the pond water or the compost etc etc

hugz4all4 08-11-2009 04:46 AM

my toy poodle also has frito feet, so Im guessing that alot of the smaller breed dogs do. Her's usually smell more frito-y (is that even a word..lol) when she is due for bath. Tucker's do smell just not as strong as Lexee's.. :)

Bacteria and yeast are all around us and many are actually good, and keep things in check. Some people get yeast infections after a round of antibiotics because the antibiotics killed all bacteria even the good kind that kept yeast at bay. I wouldn't apply anything to feet to kill the bacteria, a weekly bath should keep everything in check, and some people wipe feet off after a trip outside, but I don't. I actually believe it's a mistake to be overly clean and kill all bacteria.

I love it! We say that Sadie turns into a Corn Chip. I love it when she smells like that. Sometimes it is more prominent than other times.

Apparently it can be, but maybe nobody knows for sure...
This seems like a reasonable explanation.

See Ann, you should be happy your boys don't have 'em. ;)

LOL!!!! :p

Am I the ONLY yorkie owner whose furs don't have the Frito feet??!! I WANT the Frito feet. Green w/ envy....

Wylie's Mom 08-11-2009 12:21 PM

I can't take it...I'm gonna go the DIY route (do it yourself route) - I'm gonna buy a bag of Fritos and stick their paws in it, rubbing all around, then I will bask in their glorious Frito feet and finally feel like a part of the crowd. :p

zoeybear 08-11-2009 12:27 PM

All 3 of mine have it. My Husband is the one who discovered it. He likes to smell their feet when he is holding them like a baby. You have to smell the pads not the tops.

Lol, now that's one way to do it. I don't even like Fritos but I love that smell on Joey, learning through association I guess. I've often wondered if some dogs have it because many dog foods contained corn, maybe we should do a poll.

LOL, we should do a poll! I'm really curious now why some have it, some don't.

I'm really tempted. I wish someone could upload Frito feet to YouTube and that we had Smellevision. Sigh, someday...when technology catches up with us...

Kenna 08-12-2009 06:32 AM

"Smellivision" too funny. I wonder too what causes this. My yorkies do not have this but a friend of mines does.

Symph2001 08-12-2009 07:00 AM

Or...you could just tell your hubby you need a new Yorkie puppy because yours doesn't 'smell right'...then go look for the new pup but smell their feet first! ;)

Ok thanks for answering that, I'm always looking for correlations, or patterns, I can now take this off my list. :D

QuickSilver 08-17-2009 10:44 PM

Can I just say how hilarious the title is? "Frito", "News", "Feet", "Disturbing". Four words that I never thought would go together.

LOL :D! I like how you think. My hubby...will not like how you think :p!

How funny would it be if I started going to breeders' houses, looking at their puppies, SMELLING their feet? LOL. "Oh oops! Did you see how that puppy put her paws right into my nose! Oh, and this puppy too! I don't know what's happening here, breeder!"
