yorkie blindness I'm new to this site, so I may not be posting this in the right place-all guidance is welcome! My yorkie, Jemma is 15 years old, she is 90% blind and deaf, but manages around my house fairly well because it is familiar. Lately she has begun endless pacing around the house especially towards evening, she seems frantic at times and does not respond to being held and comforted, she wants to continue walking, pacing the perimeter of whatever room she is in. Is there anything I can do to help? |
When was the last time she had a full geriatric blood profile? My Lady is 14 and I like to do one very 6-9 months. It can tell your vet a lot about what is going on with her body. I am glad she gets around so well with her blindness. Lady has retinal degeneration and immature cataracts so her vision is starting to go. It's mainly her night vision that is the problem so far, thank heavens. |
Awwwww, your poor baby. Must feel bad to not be able to comfort her. I'd most certainly take her in for a check-up. Hope your vet can figure out what's up. Oh, I wanted to ask, did you ever check into having eye surgery done? I have a Yorkie who is going deaf and my local vet was quite concerned because she thought that Rosie was also going blind because of the cloudiness in her eyes. Turns out that she is getting old eyes like I have that causes me to need glasses. She does have the beginnings of cataracts and will be going in for 6 month checks. When they get bad enough we will do surgery because I do not want her to be both deaf and blind. Let us know what your vet says. ~Joanne~ |
Jemma has seen her vet for a check-up recently, with her age, 15, he says the blindness is typical. Last time she was put to sleep for teeth cleaning, we almost lost her, so, no more surgeries for her. Her pacing seems to be anxiety now that I have read more. She has calmed down quite a bit since we returned from vacation, she had stayed with a very nice doggie sitter. My vet had suggested either anapril or senalife to calm her, but I don't like meds for myself or my pets, so I checked on-line for more natural methods. Petmeds had a couple of natural medications, one called compossure liquid that I might try, during more stressful times for her. I appreciate the feedback and encouragement. :) |
