Tick collars? Have any of you used tick collars? I put one on Chloe the other day because her medication for fleas doesn't control ticks. She had it on for about 7 hours and became very lathargic and slept the whole time and threw up several times. I thought it was the comfortis (flea meds) so I got really freaked out. So I called the vet and they were on lunch. I decided to take it into my own hands and I took off the tick collar. Chloe is now back to her normal self. I guess she just couldn't handle the tick collar. Never got ahold of the vet though. Can't afford ANOTHER huge vet bill!! I'm just glad I got the problem taken care of!! So beware of those nasty little tick collars!! |
flea/tick collars probably 25-30 years ago, I tried one of those collars on a cat I had. I left her for a couple of hours and when I came home, she had worked her lower jaw under the collar trying to get it off. Well, it got stuck under the collar, normally no big deal. But, in that short time, the poison had darn near eaten away her lower jaw. I was shocked and haven't ever touched one since. I want nothing that powerful near an animal's fragile skin, ever. Whatever they permeate those collars with is some scary juju. |
Was it the Preventix collar or another like one made by Hartz? |
advantix I forgot, I believe Advantix takes care of fleas and ticks. That is what I use on my dogs..just started the babies on it. They did fine. Can't use it on cats. Advantage is for fleas only. |

Hmm, and I thought that was supposed to be one of the safest. Frontline Plus is supposed to repel ticks, I think, and Advantix can be used for ticks but it does contain permethrin which is controversial. |

poor cat I felt horrible. You think you're doing something good and..well you know... I've had pretty good luck with Advantix. Bear goes camping with his dad and never gets so much as a tick on him. The vet wanted me to start the babies on their first visit and they both weighed way under 1lb. I think I questioned their sanity. I waited until they were over 1lb and then I skimped on the dose, waited about an hour and wiped them down a bit with a baby wipe. I want to ease them into it. Everyone else in the house gets full dose every month, but they've been getting it for years. I miss living in Vegas where there were no fleas and so it was never an issue. Here, they come in on your pant legs from the yard. All it takes is for them to swallow one flea and next thing you know they've got tapeworm segments crawling out their butts.... |
