What is normal for BMs I have a 6 month male yorkie who poops 3 times per day. Is this normal? How many BMs (poops) are normal for a 3.5 lb dog. He also does not go at the same time each day so it is kind of hard to prevent accidents in the house. I need to switch his food - I am currently feeding him Nutro Ultra Puppy. Could this brand of food be causing him to poop so much. Any suggestions for a food that will help him have small, compact, LESS poop? |
I don't think 3 times a day is abnormal. I think my Edie goes 2x per day, but I could be wrong, since she uses her doggie door. I remember one day when she was a puppy though, she went 6x in one day! I think she may have been sick, tho. That was 8 years ago. |
I don't think 3 times a day would be excessive. Are they firm? Dogs that eat twice a day often go twice a day, but dogs who are free fed sometime go more often. I don't think the size of the dog says how many times they go, smaller dogs probably have smaller poop, and different brands of food can cause bigger or smaller poop. How many times a day do you feed? Some dogs are very regular, and go five minutes after they eat, but many healthy dogs, go whenever, and it is harder to train them. |
What's normal for poops Huggy's poops are firm and he is fed about 1/2 a cup of dry with about 1 tsp of canned food 2 times per day. He is not predictable when he will go (I am watching him right now) and it is hard to train him with BMs. We also take him outside about every 2 1/2 hours during the day and he pees. He was with the breeder until 4 months and 3 weeks old and never went outside. I was thinking another food would help to compact his poops and make him poop twice a day. :animal36 |

Zeke will usually go every time we take a walk. Zack is more of the once/twice a day. Formed and solid. They get fed twice a day mix of dry and some wet. |
Zeus goes three times a day sometimes four. Once when he wakes up and after breakfast and again after dinner. As long as they are solid I wouldn't worry. |
Stella used to go three or four times a day when she was 4 months old. Now that she's 6 months old, she has a very regular pattern in the morning when she wakes up and at night around 7 or 8, but it definitely helps when I can feed her on time! I think now that she associates BMs with walks too, it helps because rather than pushing one out just because, she'll hold all of it until we go on a walk. |
