Molly's second heat, my first! I noticed this afternoon that Molly started her heat. I believe this is her second, but I have only had her for a little over a month, she is 1.5 years old and a rehome. So this is my first heat! My husband and I have never had a female dog before, so we are clueless! It looks like a small amount right now, but will it get messy? How long does it last? Do I have to do anything special for her? We were going to try to get her spayed before she went into heat, but we are too late. Any advise would be appreciated! |
If she had been spayed before she ever had a heat she would never get mammary cancer. If you had spayed before she had her second heat, the risk would still below, about 8%.Now that she's had her second heat, her risk of cancer has risen to 25%. My best advice for you is to make her appointment to be spayed as soon after she finishes her heat as possible. It will also prevent her from having life threatening uterine infections (pyometra) later on. |
Right now, you don't need to do anything special for her. You will see blood, but it's usually not a lot. They tend to clean themselves very well. If you don't want to see any spots on the floor or furniture, you can use a diaper for her. They have disposbale ones, and also some people make some very pretty ones. Please make sure to keep her away from any males! Also, I agree she should be spayed - I ran into some problems with Pyometra myself. |

Yeah, she actually got her bc she wanted to breed her. I don't think she was considered a "pet or member of the family". They only wanted her to breed her. Sigh. I am glad I ended up with her though. I think they were mean to her, she is very timid and acts scared. Hopefully we can give her a better life. :) |
First heat No one really answered the one part of your question that I am curious about so will ask it again...how long does the heat last on average? And while I am at it, how many times per year? I assume this might vary from dog to dog but is there an average? thanks... |
The usual cycle is 21 days. For most dogs, it happens around every 6 months or twice a year. (It could be spaced out further for smaller dogs) |
