Are Yorkies really vunerable to health problems? I am thinking of purchasing/adopting a Yorkie and everywhere I've been reading about tooth decay, gum disease, joint problems, ear infections. I thought with proper grooming, brushing, etc. that would take care of the problem? But are Yorkie's prone to diseases? makes it scary >.< |
They are small breed so their are health problems they are prone to. I have 2 that are 4 and they havent had any health problems so far |
Mm I guess they're really small and that makes them vulnerable to different problems but are they really hard to prevent? And how wonderful! Glad your yorkie's are healthy :D any tips? |
Any purebred dog will be prone to certain genetic health issues because there is a small gene pool. Yorkies are 36 times more likely to have a liver shunt than all other breeds combined! The Orthopedic Foundation of America ranks Yorkies #4 is cases of luxating patellas (slipped knee caps). They are also prone to Legg-Calve-Perthes, pancreatitis, and collapsed tracheas. In order to get a puppy who will grow up to be a healthy adult, you must get a puppy from a breeder who is very knowledgeable about genetics and health tests all the dogs she breeds. By health testing, I don't mean a simple physical from a vet. Yorkies should have bile acids tests to make sure they don't have liver disease, have their knees manipulated, CERF eye exams, etc. A breeder should be able to show you proof that these tests were done. Unfortunately, the popularity of Yorkies have made them a favorite among breeders who are breeding Yorkies with unknown backgrounds that are not good representatives of the Yorkie standard. They don't get the proper health testing done so they produce puppies who grow up to look very different from what Yorkies are supposed to and full of health problems. |

Ladymom explained it perfect and as she said... all purebreds have certain diseases they are more prone to. You have worries with every breed, really. Smaller dogs tend to live a lot longer than larger breeds though. |

You just can't worry yourself about it. I got a little scared when researching the Yorkie breed on this website.. but you gotta remember, people come to these sites looking for help for their problems so that's why the boards seem over flooded with problems. Not many people post to just state how good they're dog is doing or whatever, if you know what I'm trying to say. Even if you decided on another breed, you'd probably have a whole lot more of problems to deal with. So, you can't really depend on them to actually occur, but it is good to know the risks. |
