Microchipping - Anasthesia required? Sprinkles is 5 plus months old and we are planning to microchip him this week or next. He will be neutered next month or end of this month... we are planning to do the neutering and microchipping at 2 different hospitals as they are cheaper that way. Is anesthesia required for microchipping? whats your experience? reason i am asking is he will be "sleeping" when getting neutered.. |
No is the answer The chip is inserted just like an injection Alfie didn't even blink when he had his |
Mine had it done at the neuter but I have read on here of people doing it separate without anesthesia. Its a big needle |
Duke was neutered and chip the same time, so he was 'sleeping' for both so I'm not sure what would need to happen if both are done separately. I think it would be easier on your pup to get both done at the same time and for recovery too but if the cost is a big factor, which I completely understand, then speak to the vets first or see what others on YT would say. Good luck though. |
It is not required for microchipping, but it is a huge needle and painful. How much cheaper is it at the other vets? Did you ask your vet to come down a little since you are having the neutering as well? I have had mine microchipped without anesthesia and I can tell you, it does hurt. |
The chip is about the size of a grain of rice. Some dogs do fine and some show a lot of pain. Because you have the option, you would have it done during the neuter. |
although the needle is big...none of mine let out of peep! and no they don't need to be asleep for it...lol |
My four dogs, two cats and multiple fosters have been chipped and NONE have ever been out. It is a bigger needle than usual but it will be fine. |
I personally believe it's a little safer, there has only been one death associated with the microchip, and the dog flinched while it was being injected, it too was a small dog, and the vet hit something, and the dog bled to death. With the millions of dogs chipped, and only one death, it would still be considered extremely safe, and anesthesia has more risks than that, but since he will have to have anesthesia anyway for the neutering, I would do it then. I'm surprised there is much a price difference, our vet only charged, 35.00 or 40.00 for it, and to know it didn't hurt him in the least was a blessing. |
2 of mine were microchipped w/o anesthesia and did fine. Pixie was only 3 .5 lbs and didn't make a peep. |
Well mine was just microchipped today. she was having baby 2 teeth taken out and was under anesthesia. Even though it's a big needle, if your baby is not having another procedure done the same day that will require anesthesia, do it W/O anethesia. It's just a 10 second pinch vs the higher risk of putting her under anesthesia. Good luck |
Cosmo was just neutured on Friday at 5 months and microchipped at the same time. Izzy also got microchipped same time she was spayed at 5 months and she was 3# and Cosmo was 5#. My vet just thinks it's better to do both at same time while under. |
Meg was microchipped without any anesthesia, and although it took the vet tech THREE tries to get the chip in, she had no idea anything was happening. I was pretty amazed. |
I have all mine microchipped. I also microchip each puppy at 10-11 weeks. Some of the pups don't even yelp even though it is a bigger needle. They are all awake when it's done.:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
