What to feed after spay? I know this is probably posted somewhere else but I searched and couldn't find it, and since I'm a bit worried I didn't want to wait any longer. Stella got spayed today...she came through fine and she's here with me sleepy and groggy as can be. However, she vet said to feed her tonight (she hasn't eaten since 7pm yesterday), but she doesn't seem to want any of that. She had three baby teeth removed, so her mouth might be sore too. I soaked her food in chicken broth which normally gets her to eat it, but she still won't. Should I keep trying the kibble or should I switch to something more appealing like chicken breast and white rice? How long should I wait until I worry a lot? I'm supposed to give her pain and anti-inflammatory meds tonight with food so I need to make sure she eats at some point before sleep. Any suggestions? Thanks so much! |
I know what your going through. Mandie was spayed in the beginning of May and also had quite a few baby teeth removed (B/c she had 2 rows of teeth on top and bottom). The vet told me to feed her wet food for a little while because its soft. She didn't eat the first day, really hardly didn't drink water either. She was really out of it the next day (we weren't given any pain meds) so my mom gave her a spoonfull of syrup and that was like night and day. That helped her so much.. She didnt really eat a whole lot for a few days after. Hope it helps!! |
Ya I would try anything just to get something in her tummy...Maybe like yogurt, cottege cheese...something that she usually doesnt get that is still ok for her to eat! The chicken and rice is always good..Might hurt her mouth a little..Or even some wet food...I would go with something soft just for today :) |

My vet told me to keep her diet bland for the first night and then introduce her kibble again slowly. I gave her some boiled chicken and rice which seemed to work well. Thanks everyone. I was able to give her some boiled chicken and we had chinese food last night so I gave her some of the white rice and put chicken broth on it, she gobbled all of that up--almost 1/2 the chicken tenderloin I chopped up for her! I've never seen her eat so much in one sitting! Anyway, she's still completely uninterested in her kibble, but as long as she continues to eat her chicken and rice (and some dried sweet potato treats she LOVES) I won't worry too much. But I am going to have the fiance bring home some canned pumpkin because she hasn't done a #2 since before her surgery (a day and a half ago). Does anyone know if they usually eat the pumpkin willfully or do you have to kinda force it? |
