My nursing yorkie won't drink/eat Hi all! My yorkie had 5 pups via c-section 1 week ago. Since then she turns her nose up to her food and water. She used to be the dog that wants to eat anything and everything! I started giving her milk nutrition supplement for nursing dogs, which she will drink... but I know she needs more than that. I'm afraid her milk will dry up because I know she isn't getting enough even for her. The vet perscribed her a soft food that she will take maybe 3 bites of then refuse to eat again. He suggested I stop giving her the milk supplement but offered no solutions as to how to get her to eat enough and DRINK! Any suggestions??? THANKS!!! |
My Izzie went through the same phase when she gave birth last year.. Thats when our vet suggested to add green tripe to her food (canned by a brand called Nutripe) along with a modified version of the whelping pudding (but substituting the milk with goats milk).. She would clean up her plate when her food is mashed well with the a teaspoon of Nutripe (we feed a combination of freeze dried raw and frozen raw meaty bones) and the whelping pudding helped the milk production. We continue with the tripe mixing whenever Izzie or Charlie would not eat their food or if they need to take their meds (although the tripe we give now is fresh green tripe).. But a word of warning - tripe smells really bad!! |
I also had to use tripe for Myshkha when she had her first litter, just started adding it to my current two's food, they love it. When Angel had her first she refused everthing untill I tried sardines, the canned variety. Seams the smellier the food the better they like it. |
Maravilhosa gave birth to her litter dec 11th.. she ended up being given sibq fluids daily and the last being Christmas eve.. once I was told by a breeder to give her some pain meds.. medicam.. the vet was afraid to let me do this.. we gave her boiled chicken and juice, she did not want anything.. only to lay there and feed babies.. and she was very bad.. at one point I thought we would lose her.. most of the time I was giving her chicken broth with a syringe. a drink I cannot remember for electrolites .. liver.. not much each day tho.. the vet gave us a can of food we tried..basically we were trying anything that was suggested.. he ate better then drinking..but did not eat much.. then over night after the one dose of medicam.. she turned around.. Let me know if I can help you at all.. anne |
I am no pro for this but i work in a pet sote and any nursing mom should be on baby food to get all their protein and supliment for when they are nursing and eevrything you can try puppy canned food all dogs go nuts for those :) i really hope she starts eating for teh sake of her babies and herself... goodluck for everything Bailey and I are sending some hugs |
I actually ended up buying a can of every type of canned puppy food the store offered to try to entice my Maggie to eat/drink after her litter. She finally settled on Avoderm. I took her to the vet daily, concerned that she just was not right. Things finally turned around after they put her on liquid vitamin B and antibiotics. After the antibiotics/vitamins kicked in she started drinking/eating on her own. Then I slowly switched her back to the RC puppy food I had been feeding her before. I guess we will never know what was up with her not feeling well. |
Progress So I got Abby to start eating the canned Rx food with Baby Dog food mixed in. I feed her every 3-4 hours (spoonfeed) and she eats about a can/day (tuna fish can size). I am still worried about her liquid intake though. She refuses water/chicken broth. Thanks a ton for all the input so far!!! |
How do her gums look? Have you checked her mouth for any sores? |
Her gums look fine. The vet checked her out last week and said she looks good. His answer when I asked him how to get her to drink was "just keep fighting the fight". Okay.... That doesn't help me (or her) much. |
