diarrhea the day after taking heartgard plus 1 Attachment(s) hi everyone, my baby weight 1.3kg and she is 1 year old.. she diarrhea every single time i feed her heartgard.. it will back to normal after 1 time of diarrhea is this normal? or i should stop the heartgard immediately ? please advice thx :) |
Thats not normal. Have you asked your vet about giving her inceptor instead? The weight max for heartguard is 25 lbs and inceptor is only 10 lbs so that may be the problem since she is so small |

Heartguard Plus is for heartworms PLUS other intestinal parasites/worms. If other worms are present and the Heartguard was doing its job, I don't think I'd be too alarmed at a little diarrhea, especially if it contained dead worms. That's what happens when dogs are wormed. Of course it MAY be something else, but the worming effect should be considered as a possibility. |
I would talk to the vet, however, I believe the product is doing it's job, worming your pup. Buddy has loose stools most times I give him heartguard which is once a month. I always give it to him on a Sat or Sun so I am home and get him out more often during the day because I know this will happen. Some months all is fine other times he has loose stools. I belive this to be normal. If it clears up after the first time you know it's doing it's job. I see nothing to be concerned about. |
My little Tia is only 2.5 - 3 lbs and my vet said to give her half a heartguard. So far it's worked great. She's 1.5 yrs and I've had her for 4 mos. Good luck and she is just adorable!:) |
We don't have heart worms in Egypt so I can't help you. The vet says we don't have the right (wrong?) kind of mosquitoes. I would consult your vet. Your little girl is absolutely adorable. |
If it only happens occasionally then it may be eliminating intestinal parasites, but that shouldn't be happening monthly IMO. I would switch to Interceptor. Splitting Heartgard Plus in half isn't okay because the med is injected in and isn't distributed evenly, so the dog could get the whole dose the first month and none the next. |
