When can my puppy play with her cousin? My new puppy will be starting her shots over the course of the next month or so. She has a Yorkshire terrier cousin named Bailey. Bailey has had all of her shot and is in great health and very well taken care of. My question is: At what point in little Sadie's life can she go visit Bailey? Does she have to have all of her shots in order to play with an already vaccinated dog? I know she can't go around parks and trails because of strange dogs that might make her sick, but can she play with a healthy and well vaccinated dog before her rounds of shots are completely finished, or must i wait until she's had them all in her for the recommended extra two weeks?? Thanks and I hope this made sense! |
After she has all her puppy shots. Your vet will be able to tell you when it is safe. |
dogs that are vaccinated can still make her sick?? Quote:

Since she is so young...you'll have to be very careful. The people you got her from, weren't exactly into getting them the care/shots they need, from what I read in your other posts. Have you taken her to the vet to get checked out? Tested for worms? You don't want to take her places until you know that she is 100% healthy and she has all her shots. If you haven't taken her in to be check out yet from your vet....that needs to be done and the vet will tell you all the precautions you need to take with such a young puppy. |

thanks for the advice, we'll be keeping our pup home and away from all doggie company until she's had all her shots for a good few weeks. :D |
I've learned along the way, with kids and all, that shots aren't 100%....it lessons the likelihood of contracting what the shot is given for. I can tell you, I have known many people who have gotten a flu shot only to have the flu a few days later. Also, I'm not sure how long after the shot is given that it is actually protecting the pup. She is young and knowing that I would be extra careful. I would def. talk to the vet before any play dates. |
Usually shots aren't done till after they are 16 weeks old....which is 4 months. So it will be more than just a few weeks......... |
Ok I'm a little freaked out...I let Karlee go out for short walks each day I have 2 outdoor cats but of course they keep their distance from her and we have a outside dog, I've not let Karlee get too close to any of them she has just had 1 round of shots so have I put her at risk to get sick? From now on should I just keep her indoors until all her shots? Thanks!! Also we live on a farm with no other neighbors or other animals around besides our own, the reason I've took her out is for potty time. |

Jackson was 9 weeks old when I brought him home and I brought him directly to my dad's house after getting him... he had a Jack Russell mix and he really opened up when there was another doggy in the house! He was so happy! The very next day, we went to my mom's house (where I live) and they had a dog there too and they've been fine. He had already had one set of shots though at 8 weeks old. I think it's good to get them socialized early on. No dog parks, Petsmarts or a place with a lot of dogs but I see no issue with allowing your cousins doggy to play with Sadie at all. What if you already had another dog at home? You're not going to not let Sadie play/meet your other dog? It's just one dog, who you know is up-to-date, it should not be a problem at all!! I would not be waiting until my dog was 4+ months to expose them to other dogs or people or the outside. Just be smart about it. Jackson did and learned soo much from 9 weeks-16 weeks that I had him. Snow, rain, other dogs, potty training was much easier. I would never agree with keeping a dog cooped up inside until 16-18 weeks of age. |
