Medicine: Enalapril Maleate: Your Dog Use It? I have a 12 1/2 yr. old baby girl female yorkie that had some problems brought on by a tick. Through examination and x-rays, it was discovered she has an enlarged heart. The doctor prescribed Enalapril Maleate for her. Do you have any yorkies or other dogs that take it? If so, how has it been for them? I'm scared to give something new to my baby girl, but looks like she'll have to take 2.5mg of it every day for life. Thanks, Matthias |
Is this being used for hypertension or heart failure? It's a pretty common drug, so the use of it should be pretty standard. And if your baby has high blood pressure, it should help w/ that... |
"Enlarged heart" is another way of saying congestive heart failure. Due to what the doctor found, he prescribed it for her. Since first posting this post, I did online studying and am very happy and confident the dr. prescribed the right thing. Studies have shown a 92% positive outlook for the dogs taking it. Thanks, Matthias |
Did a regular vet prescribe it or a cardiologist? While it is very possible that the heart is enlarged, sometimes vets think it is in Yorkies because they have larger hearts than other dogs of their size. So just because a looks large to a regular vet doesn't mean it is. |
My pom was on it for congestive heart failure and did real well on it for a year or so. It really helped with her breathing. Maya was 11 when she went on it. Hope your baby feels better. |
It's been a while since I posted this and actually forgot all about it. Ellie May, A vet prescribed it. ======================= Afterwards I ended up studying and found Yorkies do a have a larger heart size to body ratio. I wonder if the vet knew that? Anyway, I ended up not using the pill for the "baby" about maybe 4-6 months later. She lived to be 15 1/2 years making it to the first week of June 2012. Thank y'all for the replies. Matthias |
Thanks for the update! I'm glad that your Yorkie lived to be a ripe old age without the medicine. Maybe your post will help others in the same situation by getting them to question their vet in greater detail or by seeking a second opinion. |
pstinard, That's a good idea to get second opinions in matters of importance. As soon as I learned about possible side effects along with yorkies do having larger than normal heart size to body ratio, I discontinued giving the maleate and she did just fine without it. ================================ As for second opinions, someone just told me the other day that the doctor wanted to have one of his toes removed due to infection. A second opinion from another dr. and hospital got him on the road to recovery and his toe healed! No amputation necessary. Thank you very much for the replies. Matthias |
