Really gross poo question! I have a really gross question but I really want to know if this is normal and if there is something I can do. My puppy Stella goes poo about 5 times a day. It seems like a lot to me but I have heard this is normal for puppies. My question is this: does anyone else have a problem with the poo sticking in their puppy's fur?!? I have to bathe Stella every other day b/c of it and sometimes I even have to cut it out of her fur since it won't come out with a washing. I think it is b/c her fur is too long 'down there' but I can not have her groomed yet (she gets her last shots in about 3 weeks). Will a grooming help with this issue? I just didn't know this could be such a problem! Is there something I can do about it so I am not constantly bathing her? Thanks for your advice on such a stinky subject :p |
You can try trimming just a little bit of hair around her rear end to help with the problem. You can also add baby wipes to that as well and just quickly wipe down her rear after she does her business. I had to cut a little hair off my little one also when he was younger. I usually keep baby wipes since I've brought my puppy home just to wipe the urine off of his hair and to keep him cleaner, and so he won't smell. |
Yes, a "sanitary cut" includes trimming the hair around the anus so it doesn't get stuck. Something really weird just occurred to me... today I was looking at a pug's butthole and thinking about how easy it must be to clean with that flat, straight hair. I guess I never thought I'd be so fixated on dog butts! Grooming wipes are a good idea. I don't use baby wipes, because a baby can't lick its own butt (sorry, just being clear), and I don't want to use anything with bad chemicals. Also, your pup's poop should be solid enough that his butt should be pretty clean after each "session". If his poops are consistently messy, you might need to change his diet. |
thanks for the responses! I think Stella's diet does need to be changed. I feed her Science Diet right now and the poo is softish. squishy, if you will. sorry...ewww. Can you recommend a good food for her? I know most of the pet food at the dog stores are not good for them. Thanks again :) |
butt trimming My Baby occasionally does a sticky tootsie roll and she has an extraordinary amount of fluffy hair, including on her rear end, so she once in awhile, clingons can be a problem. I keep the fur on her butt trimmed so that it isn't an issue. She is way too young and doesn't have enough hair to really need to go to the groomer, she is only three months, but to keep her cleaner I do keep her barebutted. Keeps her baths down to once a week....LOL |
oh yeah as long as they are eating straight royal canin, no problem. only get the stickies when they have one too many cheerio treats...my bad entirely...it's the sugar |
Klingons! Ha! They're even worse than Captain Kirk thought! Sorry, nerd moment. WRT food, you will get a LOT of opinions on that. I feed Halo. A lot of yorkies are allergic to RC, so personally I would not recommend that unless your dog is already eating it without problems. There is a sticky in this section on top-rated food brands, and a list of companies that will send you samples. PetSmart carries a huge selection of kibbles, many of which are excellent (and many which are not). Most higher end pet stores can give you some samples without you having to write away for them. If her poops are softer, you probably want something higher protein, since protein tends to bind more. |
Okay, I am going to quote Victoria Stilwell on Proper Pooping: "A good poop is one which is formed, but still leaves a residue on the pavement." Basically, like people, you don't want your doggie to be struggling to expel her waste, but it also shouldn't be completely smooth and sticky. |

You mention grooming wipes? I haven't heard of that, (although I would have never thought to look for wipes at petsmart).I have just simply been buying the hypoallergenic baby wipes. I buy this type because I know they're for babies with sensitive skin and I know if they're safe enough for babies then they are safe enough to use on a dog. However, I'm curious about these grooming wipes now, although I can't imagine there would be much of a difference between the two. |
Yeah, I imagine they are like baby wipes, except less effective because they don't use soap. I have EarthBath and Nature's Miracle brands. |
I just looked up groomer wipes on petsmart's website, then I looked on huggies site for comparison. Just as I had suspected, basically the same thing except for the actual baby wipes are going to be very mild thus safe to use on a dog,(not to say that the dog wipes arent), and obviously much cheaper, so can save a lot by purchasing actual baby wipes, (especially since you can buy the big refill packs, which is what we do). I would suggest buying the hypoallergenice over any other kind because it's going to be so mild, but let's face it, if it's safe enough for a newborn's bottom then obviously it will be safe for a baby with fur. |
Thank you for the information. I had thought there might be something in a baby wipe that couldn't be licked or dangerous for dogs, but I did not look specifically. One thing also that is nice about baby wipes is they have the little packs you can carry with you. I just might have to pick some up! |
RC dog food and baby wipes Thanks for the tip on RC. I've been giving a lot of thought to a recipe I saw on this site for homemade raw dog food. A lot of members seem to think that it works really well. I'm wondering if the occasional klingons are due to the extra cheerios or are a problem with the RC? Also, I use babywipes for everything. I use the all natural fragrance free ones. Huggies in the green box, I think. I buy them in bulk and refill. What is great about them is that I pick up the tootsie rolls and wad 'em up and throw them in the trash and there is absolutely no odor. Stops the smell dead. |
