For parents who give Royal Ark Omega fish oil and Cosequin At first Uni was fine with just licking the fish oil straight from a spoon. Then I had to start mixing it in with cottage cheese, then dipping bits of bread into it, and now she doesn't even want that! As for the Cosequin, i started mixing in with canned again b/c the directions said it would "stick" better to the food as opposed to bone dry kibble. BUT she won't eat that anymore either! She KNOWS when there is something extra in her food. She will eat her kibble plain just fine at lunch, whereas before she would much prefer her kibble with some canned mixed in. Last night I had to mix in little bits of hard boiled egg white to bribe her into eating her dinner. I know the "they will eat when they are hungry" thing, but I don't want to waste the supplements that I am spending good money on. What do you all do? Any hints for me? Thanks! |
Someone? Anyone? helloooo??? |
I give cosequin right on the dry food. Morgan is free fed so it sits there until she eats it. I feed her at night so for example: Last night i gave her a new bowl of food and sprinkled the cosequin on top of it. She ate some last night and then ate some this morning and throughout the day. If she eats the majority of the food/supplemt the night i give it to her then i'll give her a new one the next night. If she only eats a small amount at night, and the majority of it the next day then she doesn't get the cosequin that night and i'll give it tomorrow. Sometimes i forget or don't notice when she actually eats so i'll just give her the cosequin anyway when i make up a new bowl. it won't hurt. Also a lot of the time i also add coconut oil to her food so she eats the majority of it when i first give it to her. the coconut oil is for her coat and itchiness so that too is a supplement (that just happens to taste good so she eats more). |
K kewl thanks. I just gave her some canned and cosequin + omega only, no kibble. I'm gonna up her lunch kibble amount during the day (when she has no problem eating it plain, who knows why) until I can change up her food. I'm thinking dick van patten or wellness...? |
Since Uni is REALLY smart...she probably knows there's something you're adding & she also knows that you'll give her 'other' yummie things to eat if she doesn't eat her food. If you're going to switch to Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance, you can ask for samples. They seem to really like the formulas w/Sweet Potatoes. The only thing is, they don't have small bites in most of them. I feed mine SP & Venison. |
i wouldn't switch her food. That's exactly what she's trying to do to you. She's holding out and driving you insane when she just proved that her regular kibble is just fine to eat. I'd just keep feeding her the dry kibble that you do. Maybe at night give her a tsp of the wet with the supplements mixed in. She's very smart, and she's winning this food/supplement battle. LOL |
I can only say what I do, but some may feel it is a bit, um, forceful. However, I'm not waiting around all day until Princess Ellie decides to cooperate, so here you go: For pills that have to be swallowed whole, I drop them in the back of her mouth and push them down with my finger. Sometimes a use a pill gun. With chewables, if they can be swallowed whole, I'd probably do that. If not, then they can be crushed and put into soft food. With crushed (chewable) pills and capsules that can be broken open, I put them on her food. She is fine with it. The same goes for liquid meds. If she is not fine with it they get mixed into about 1/2 tbls. of something like sweet potato and I force bites in her mouth with my finger and hold her mouth closed until she swallows. When she can't have soft food (like s. potato) for whatever reason, I put the powder in a bit of water and force that down. That is kinda nasty for her, so I try to avoid it though. |

Thanks for the info. Uni's supplements are mixable so I think I'll pass on the pill gun for now. LOL I had a cat before where I had to force pills down. But all i had to do was put in it and hold the mouth shut until they licked their nose. not too bad. |
