Another question about dog food, please help :)
 

Right now Tobie is on Royal Canin puppy 33 and he is doing great on it. The vet even asked us what type of food he's on people his heart and lungs sounded great and his coat was shiny. I plan to keep him on that until he's 1 but then I would like to change to an even better dog food. So I need suggestions on a good quality dog food that isn't any more expensive than RC (having 4 dogs, I just can't afford anymore than that) and that I can buy at Petsmart.

Also, I have been feeding Science Diet to my other 3 dogs but I have also heard some negative things about it so are there any suggestions on a good senior dog food... again, that isn't anymore expensive than SD.

I am so clueless when it comes to dog food so I need help! lol. Thanks!

At Petsmart, probably the best that you could get would be Blue Buffalo. It may be a tad more expensive, but it's definitely better. Nature's Recipe might also be an option, but I don't hear it mentioned much on this site, so I'm not 100% sure if it's an ok food or not. There are many choices for high quality foods some of which include Innova, Innova EVO, Taste of the Wild and Orijen. Merrick can even be a choice. The prices are a bit higher with these foods, but the quality is definitely worth it.

Check out the video on my website. Science Diet is terrible, it has by products which can consist of fish heads, chicken heads, duck heads and other bones. They do this in most dog food to provide extra protein. I feed my dogs Lifes Abundance, which is organic. I love that it was formulated by a top vet, Jane Bicks & it includes fresh veggies, top quality meats etc. Seriously, once you watch that video, you will start looking closely to labels & know what to stay away from. I don't like Blue Buffalo it is consisted of "deboned chicken" which can also include bones.

I go to two specialty shops. One is called Mumme's and the other is called Pet Supplies Plus. Mumme's is only in Texas. Pet Supplies Plus is in other states, but only on the East side (I believe Texas is the farthest West state they touch).

I think it's great you're going to keep him on that until he's one. I don't believe high-protein foods are very good for pups under one. I feed my Addie Evo (red meat small bites--the kibble), and she absolutely loves it.

I plan on rotating her food after she finishes the current bag. I'll probably go to Evo's other flavour (chicken or turkey ... I can't remember), or I'll go to Solid Gold, Orijen, Canidae or maybe Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul. From what I've researched, all these are high-quality dog foods. And I'm almost positive none were ever on the FDA's warning list during the whole China scare. Of course, I'll double check before I actually switch.

Science Diet is very expensive for it's lack of quality. With the ones listed above, you're actually getting what you pay for. I don't know the exact price, but they are around the price of Science Diet. They may be a little more costly but not ridiculously so.

If you go to a certain brand of dog food's website, you can type your zip code and it will
tell you where to buy it. I recommend Innova, Merrick's, Wellness, Orijen, Taste of the
Wild, etc.

I get a 6lb bag of Innova adult food for around $12.99.

If you go to the company's website of the food that you're interested in, you should be able to look up stores around your area that sell that particular brand. Luckily, I have a few stores very close by that I can buy the high quality foods from. I know there are members on here that purchase their food online.

I also buy from Pet Supplies Plus. They carry many excellent brands. I drive about 45 min to the nearest store, but buy enough I don't have to go but about once every 2 months. I once fed RC to Maddie but had to switch due to allergies. I had no problem finding quality food at even a cheaper price.

When we got Maggie, she would not eat her puppy food. She would only eat what our other dogs were eating. We tried several foods. We finally, through the advice of someone very knowledgeable about dog food, switched all our dogs to Nature's Variety Prairie because it is a good quality all life stages food that is appropriate for young puppies as well as the older dogs. We had no issues with the transition and all 5 dogs are doing just fine on it. Also, on Nature's Variety website you can get a coupon for a free small bag with the purchase of a bag.

Our dogs only eat Nature's Variety raw medallions.
Both of them had extremely bad skin allergies before we made the switch, and now that's cleared up! We've used Merrick's, Chicken Soup, and Wellness, but all three of those made Xavier gassy. Hope you find the perfect food for your babies!
