Insurance? Is your yorkie insured? I insured Lucy a few months ago (she's 6 months now), it's not cheap but I figure if something happened to her it would be cheaper in the long run. What are your thoughts on insurance? Do you have it? Waste of money? |
We have it, through PetSecure. I am contemplating quitting as the fees just raised about 6 dollars a month. I will wait until Rocky's next blood test (to make sure he is doing OK, had some iffy results earlier) and if all is well I think we will quit. It doesn't cover shots, chec-ups, routine testing ... so it is a lot of money for no value (unless there is an accident or something else horrific). Plus, it gets more costly as they age, so it is almost better to save money now for any future health problems. I don't know ... :confused: I can see both ways.... :aimeeyork |
I have ASPCA pet insurance for Gus. Last year we broke about even, but we had a lot of vet visits. Good to have, I think. |
I have VPI on my 3. Used it a lot on Cali, rarely on Pixie and never on Roxie and I hope I don't have to use it but having 3 I want to be sure I can get them any care they need. |
I don't have any for Sophie. I was thinking about getting it for her when we first got her, but than my husband was doing the math and we just figured it wasn't worth it. We just figured all that money you pay for insurance, we could just put in our savings account and it would be there incase we need it. |
We have PetPlan USA and feel better knowing that we won't be overwhelmed by huge bills in the event of an accident or illness. A little costly, but well worth the peace of mind. |
Penny is on Trupanion. I think that it is worth it given the cost of veterinary care in our area-- even though I work at a veterinary hospital myself and get an employee discount! If anything were to ever go wrong with her that required a specialist or a board certified surgeon, I would not want to have to make a decision to treat her or not based on finances. She lives a little bit more of a high-risk lifestyle than a lot of other dogs-- she's a big hiker and adventurer, which may be fun for her but also increases the risk that she might be injured one day. Also, we have some wonderful specialists in things like oncology here in Western Washington, and if as she ages she ever develops cancer or another disease, I would want to be able to provide her with the best care possible. I chose Trupanion over the other plans out there because they cover many congenital and hereditary conditions that most other insurers will not cover. |

Their website is Trupanion Pet Insurance | Pet Health Insurance for your Dog or Cat. They were originally a Canadian company but they are in the process of moving into the US now, so not all states are serviced just yet. |
Oh, I should probably mention too-- they don't cover routine vaccines and heartworm preventative and stuff like that. They're very good about illnesses and injuries though. I liked that approach since I can easily budget for the normal annual things, but the emergency services or serious illnesses would be more difficult. |
