Hello, I am new to the forum and am loving the information I have read already on yorkies. I'm needing help with my baby. Sebastian in 1 yr old and had been itching and scratching for about 2-3 months now. I have taken him to the vet at which time i was given an antifungal shampoo which didnt seem to help much. He bites and scratches primarily on his paws and his back. He has eaten Iams small breed since a pup. Anyone have any help for me pleassse?? :animal36

Itchy paws can indicate airborne allergies, but it also may be a food allergy. Search in the Health & Diet forum for post on dog foods and do the research for a food that doesn't have corn as many dogs have reactions to corn. Chicken can also cause problems. You can get some Itch Relief shampoo to help with some temporary relief, but the best thing would be to try and find out what is the cause of the itching and eliminate that.

Hi and welcome to YT! :) It does sound like you might have a food allergy issue with the biting and scratching. There are many different foods available that might help with a food allergy. I feed Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Venison with is limited ingredient food. If you decided to change food, do it slowly and after fully changing it still might takr several weeks to see any improvement.

I just was curious what the outcome was..... Did you change his food? Did it make a difference?

I switched my itchy/scratchy Yorkie to "Orijen RED" and he is itch free and happy as can be. He LOVES this food!!!

I am researching Orijen for that very reason. How long before you noticed the itching getting better? Glad you found something that works.

Honestly, I noticed a change about 3 days after we switched fully. I switched ALL his treats too, only natural ingredients. He really likes the Wellness brand, Pure Rewards. They are small and chewy.

Thanks! I requested a sample from Orijen, I hope they reply. I will give the Wellness treats a try. Three days is an awesome amount of time to see a change. Can't wait to see if we are as lucky.

Sorry a little off topic here, but my Bonnie is itchy too. I switched her to these Wellness treats, and the little pig swallows them so fast (without chewing too well) that she gets choked.. This morning she got choked and squeeked like a rubber toy. It scared me to death. She will not be getting any more of these. Too bad, cause I really wanted her to have a nice meaty, chewie treat for using the potty pad. :(

Any update on this pup? Skin issues / allergies can be very tough. You first have to try to find out if it's seasonal, environmental, or food....food is the least likely, btw. There are ways to treat symptoms (or, eliminate the cause, if it's food), but first you kind of have to narrow it down and try to figure out what it is. I would probably get him off the Iams and onto a limited ingred. food for 3 mths -- like Natural Balance Duck/Potato etc. - but, if your current food has flax in it, then I would not recommend Natural Balance (why on earth they put flax in a food meant for allergy dogs is beyond me).

Anyway, there are lots of ways to address itching...but just wanted to see if you're still around...

Don't want to hijack the thread, but just curious--

Is flax another high-allergen ingredient? Stella is eating 1/2 Royal Canin Puppy and 1/2 Natural Balance Ultra Premium (I'm trying to transition her to only NB but she loves the taste of the RC so she won't eat it unless there's some mixed in...whatever) and I was brushing her yesterday and I saw dandruff :eek:

She's been itching a little, but I didn't notice anything until I actually saw her poor dry skin. She also got a groom on Tuesday, so I'm wondering if maybe that was it? She's been to that groomer before and they used the same shampoo as last time...should I just wait and see if it was in fact the groom before I try and switch her food over again? Are there any moisturizers that I could use or anything that would help soothe her in the meantime?

:eek: Oh My!!!! Well actually Dooie Eats them way too fast too sometimes. In fact, I usually hold them tight while he nibbles from my hand, not that I WANT to hand feed him, but it forces him to eat them slowly.

I guess they are a pretty healthy treat, but if they are dangerous then that cancels the other out. Sorry to reccommend something unsafe. I should have told you how fast they go down. :(

The other Chewy treat you you can try is Zuke's Jerky Naturals. But again I would hold them or break them down into smaller pieces. They have pretty good ingredients too. www.zukes.com :thumbup:
