How far do adult Yorkies like to walk?
 
I'm researching getting my first Yorkie, and I want to have realistic expectations about how far he will want to go for a walk on leash (when he is an adult)--and how far is healthy for him to walk each day. I enjoy going for a 15 minute brisk walk each day, but that seems like too long for a little dog to go.

What is a healthful walk on a leash for an adult Yorkie?

I usually walk about half a mile with Roscoe and he does fine and could probably walk a little longer!

Fifteen minutes isnt long at all. I think yorkies need at least that much exercise a day. I took mine to a festival once and they walked 4 hrs with water and potty breaks of course. I think how long you can walk them all depends on how hot it is outside

I usually take my boys for about a 1/2 hour. :)

Mine have two 45min walks a day (Twinkle is very energetic and is practically climbing the walls if she doesn't have at least that!)....at weekends we can be out for hours. They'll both drink water from a sports bottle, which makes things easier. If it's a really hot day (not generally a problem in England:rolleyes:) we walk them early in the morning or in the evening instead.

Saying that, I'm fortunate that I work from home and so have that time to spare during the week (not easy to fit in two 45min walks a day when you've been out at work all day!) I think as long as your yorkie is getting exercised he/she will fit in with your routine with regards to length of time xxx xxx

I have a yorkie and he is one, and I walk him 2 miles each day about 45 minutes and sometimes he is still hyper when we get back.:eek:

Wow! I'm pleasantly surprised to learn how long they like to walk (and need to walk). (These are wonderful dogs!) I work from home doing research and writing, so I can easily take him (or her) for at least one walk a day (sounds like he might like a walk morning and evening).

In Oklahoma we have to be very careful in the summer not only about the heat but also have to realize that the sidewalk is too hot for their feet.
