Are rib bones harmful to little yorkies? I know that chicken bones are harmful but can I give my little "Finn" a bone from pork ribs? |
Welcome to yorkie talk! I think any bone can be potentially harmful to a dog. I would recommend giving you yorkie the meat not the bone... and pass some over here! I love BBQ ribs! |
Don't give your Yorkie any kind of bones. Any bone can splinter and Yorkie systems are way too small to deal with that. Little bits of meat and veggies are fine...your pooch will be very happy and not feel deprived at all. :) |
Welcome to yorkietalk!!! 2 Attachment(s) :yorkietal :welcome4: You will get a lot of different opinions. Personally, I feel like beef rib bones and beef shank bones are the safest thing for them to chew. I have been using beef rib bones and shank (marow bones) for years. I have my butcher cut the shanks about 3/4" thick. I use the meat for human consumption and clean the bones well. I have had at least a dozen yorkies and our boxer gnaw on the shank bones for years and have had to throw only one away due to wear. When the bones get nasty, I wash them in the diswasher. The shank bones are really neat because you can rub peanutbutter or cream cheese around the inside for extra chewing pleasure. |
Raw bones are not harmful. Only cooked bones. A raw rib bone would be fine to gnaw on and good for their teeth and jaws. Just because they are small doesn't mean they can't have raw bones! |

I give my yorkies and Biewers raw chicken necks, backs, and wings all the time. They love them and it helps to keep their teeth clean. Raw bones are soft and digestable. Never give cooked bones of any kind. |
So your bones are cooked and not raw. I don't know how to get raw bones. Finn is on a Food Trial to determine what he is allergic to. He is limited to ONLY this vet food and we are going crazy wanting to give him something. He seems so hungry but our vet said they only need about 1/4 cup of food a day. We still keep out the dry food all day but we give him a little bit of the canned food every evening. Finn is also on prednisone and benadryl. We have been fighting these alergies since we got him in December. We have to stick to this food trial to see what he is allergic to. The shots didn't seem to work, although it has been about 13 days since the shot and he is doing better. Oh and by the way Finn is almost 10 pounds and is almost 9 months old. We have been over feeding him and are trying to not give ANY MORE TABLE SCRAPS. We have no children so Finn is our life. Would love to hear everyone's opinion's. LOVE THIS SITE! |
I am not going to give my opinion on this because I believe everyone has his/her own on the topic. The only thing I would suggest is a thorough internet search on the topic. There is a lot of information out there. There have been documented cases of problems with raw bones. I think each person has to do their own research and come to a conclusion about what is best for their pet. |
I agree with ladyjane. Everyone has to make up their own mind as to what is best for their pet. There have been lots of documented cases of poisoned kibble and dogs have died from it. Do your research, whatever diet you decide on! |
