Leg Cramps!!!!! My Yorkie is 3 1/2 years old and he has been recently getting leg cramps. He doesn't cry out when he gets them. I'll notice that he is not stepping down on one of his legs and I will massage whatever leg is locked up (cramped) until it is no longer cramped and he is back to his old self. The cramps seem to have no rhyme or reason. Their is no consistency to when or which leg they happen to. My Yorkie also does not cry out when I massage them, any ideas? |
I would recommend taking him to the vet - this is a symptom of Lyme's disease. |
They are not leg cramps, but most likely luxating patellas where the knee cap slips in and out of place. They are every common in Yorkies, unfortunately. If you look in the Health section, you will see tons of threads on the subject. Luxating Patella: A Knee Problem in Dogs He needs to be evaluated by your vet. |
Thank you! The information provided was incredibly helpful. I really appreciate you all taking the time to help educate me on what has been going on with his legs. I feel much more empowered on how to handle it when it happens again. My heart wont sink thinking I am the worst pet owner ever. Thank you for helping me release some of the guilt when I see his little leg get locked. You guys are the best! |
does it happen just to the back legs or are the front legs involved too? |
If its nothing serious...maybe just a vitimin deficiency? |
All 4 legs It happens to all of his legs. He can be laying down and I will notice one will lock. The other day I found him laying on the floor and his frontleft and back right were locked. He doesnt have to be running or playing around. It reminds me of getting a charlie horse in my leg. If i stretch my calf muscle it will sometimes lock on me. |
since its happening in all of his legs i would suspect lyme disease. You can take him to the vet and have a simple blood snap test done while you wait. If it were LP then it would only occur in the back legs. Knees in the rear legs, elbows in the front. Now, don't get me know, he could still have LP but this particular situation i would suspect something else is going on. |
