Layla gained 3 pounds while at Grandma's for a week... We went out of town for a week and left our baby with her Grandma and Grandpa (DH's parents) who love her dearly and spoil her rotten. But their idea of spoiling rotten is feeding her table food, bologne (1/2 piece) every morning and popcorn every night. They have babysat before but have never been this bad as far as the crap they feed her. So needless to say, she will not go back there. No matter how much I tell them not to feed her table food or crap, they will do it anyway. So that is why I say she will never go back for a long visit. So to my problem...I need to put Layla on a diet. And I am not sure how to go about that. Maybe the extra weight will normally fall off being home as we don't feed her the stuff her grandparents fed her. She normally free feeds, and has never had a weight issue with this method. But now I am thinking for a little bit I should feed her twice a day with measured amounts. And lay off the milk bones or at least break in half. I need your advice. How should I go about getting these extra pounds off of her without starving her or being a mean Mom. She went to Grandmas at 9.5# and came back at about 13#. BTW, she is four years old. Thanks for your help. |
wow that is a lot of weight to gain for such a little dog. You can continue to free feed her if she is a nibbler just make sure you give her a set amount and no more for the rest of the day. Instead of treats give her ice cubes, they don't know the difference as long as you are giving them something crunchy LOL. And maybe an extra walk a day or some extra play time. the weight should come off. |
i would jsut cut down on treats and start walks - my Layla needed to loose 1 pound (go from 7 down to 6) and we have just started walking her twice a day and i have REALLY noticed a diffference. |
Bad grandma and bad grampa. Sounds like they adore your baby and if you don't let her visit once in a while they will really feel bad. For the dog food you are using, check and see if they have a 'diet' brand. That way you can let her continue to free feed. :) |
Joey had to go on a diet after a tricks training class put on an extra pound, the vet said to reduce his food by a third, and substitute about 5 green beans in it place, the green beans "fills them up, but don't have many calories, and Joey loves them. I use the frozen kind and just warm them to room temperature. He lost about an ounce a week this way. |
OMG bologna???? That's horrible! Can you even imagine a human gaining 3 pounds in a week? That is crazy. I would be furious. It's so hard to get them back to eating healthy dog food after all that junk. Just do what you're doing, measured amounts, no treats. The ice cube idea is great. isn't that what supermodels do? LOL PS Can dogs eat celery? I heard that for people, your body burns more calories digesting the celery than the actual celery itself, resulting in negative calories. Just peel off the stringy parts. Is it ok to give to dogs? |
Layla's first day of dieting has gone well. She was served breakfast and then dinner. So no free feeding today and she seems fine. I broke her milkbone treat in half and we walked a mile today. She is pooped. She went straight to the cold slate surround on the fireplace to cool down. So far so good. |

Ha ha, I love celery. I have heard the celery "negative calories" thing is a myth, but it's certainly not fattening. Thor will not eat it, of course. Anyway, to the OP, did the weight come off? I once gave Thor this Kong stuffin' stuff and he gained a noticible amount of weight over the course of a week, probably an ounce or two. He lost it just as fast, though. He definitely has a set weight point, and it's on the low side. |

I felt confident that just getting back in her normal routine in my house would melt the pounds away anyway. So she is getting back on a healthy track and she is very happy. If she is happy, I am happy. :D |
exercise is a very good idea |
