Ear cleaning question I groom Layla at home and was being a little lax on pulling out her ear hair (i hate doing it) anyways, I did it last week and have been noticing she has quite a bit of wax inside her ear. Can i use a q-tip to get it out and should I put something like oil on the q-tip to help me get it out? |
My groomer recommends witch hazel? and a cotton pad (like the kind you use to remove makeup) You should only use cotton swabs on the outside of the ear (the part you can see) and never put it down their ear canal. I've seen her get some nasty stuff out with just the cotton pad so I would go with that. They make special ear cleaners but they are mostly chemicals. I can't stand the smell of witch hazel so I let the groomer do it :) |
What color was the wax? Clear? We use ear cleaner/drying solution (Chlorhexiderm Flush) here because Ellie is so prone to yeast infections and I don't pluck ear hair often. I try to do it after every bath at the least. It is chemical but it is better than what you have to use to treat an infection. Cotton balls are okay if you don't want to use q-tips. I personally can't stand using them because you are just getting the very surface. A lot of vets will tell you not to use q-tips, so it is important to find out if it's okay with Layla's vet. I do use q-tips but there is a certain way you have to hold the ear back so it doesn't go down too deep. |

and i don't want to go way IN her ear- just those weird crevasses- that's where I see it |
It's weird, Thor seems to get NO ear wax. I always wonder if I should be cleaning deeper, but I don't want to hurt him. I wish his teeth stayed as clean as his ears do. |

Uni doesn't get much wax either. I guess just like people. Some have wax dripping out their ears, and others are dry and flaky. Eww gross LOL |
If at all possible, get a ear cleaning solution with a drying agent. I use Vet Solutions from Revivalanimal.com. After each bath I just insert the tip to the opening of the ear canal and squeeze. Try to hold the head in such a position to allow the solution to work and not seep out (about 15 seconds is good). Let go and the pup shake it's head....alol the wax will come to the surface and all you have to do is use a Q-Tip on the outside. |

Crystal- that's exactly where i want to clean- just those little crevices you can see when you pull the ear back. |
