What the heck is this lump??!!! Ok please someone tell me the injection spot swells up? It's like an oval shape about 2" long and maybe 1" wide, just off her spine towards the right side behind the shoulder. She got her DHPP booster and rabies on the 7th, a little over a week ago. How did i not notice this before? I push it around and it doesn't seem to bother her. I look under the fur and there is no redness. it feels harder than fatty tissue, but not as hard as a knot. Do you think b/c she got two shots that's why it is oval in shape and not round? I called the vet and they said they do swell up and that I need to massage it? But I can't remember if she got her shot on her right side or her left side. Should I bring her in again, or am I being too paranoid? |
Yes it can be normal. Some dogs get a bump at the injection site. :) No worries!! |
How long does it usually take for it to go down? She got the shots on the 7th, and I just barely noticed it today, and i brush and pet her everyday! that's why I freaked myself out, I don't know if it was there yesterday. Can it sometimes take a few days for the swell to build up? |
Mazee had a bump come up about 3-5 days after her shots last year. I don't remember exactly how long it stayed but it was there for at least a week maybe 2. I remember thinking at the time "is this ever going to go down?" so I know it stayed a little while. Everyone on here and my vet all said it was normal and it didn't bother her, it just went down on it's own. |
Yes, this sometimes happens. Shelby had the same issue a week ago. She had a small allergic reaction...... we gave her a 1/2 teaspoon of childrens liquid benedryl and it helped her. (Did this with advice from her vet) |
phew! Ok thanks guys! I'll try massaging it down. Just also talked to SIL who has two young kids and she says the same thing when they get shots, you have to massage it down. |
Don't Panic.:D I understand how you feel. The same thing happened last year to me when yogi had his annual shots. I felt a bump on his back and immediately took him to the vet because I was afraid of what it might be. Especially since he was already three and this had never happened. The vet told me to wait and see if the bump went down because it was more than likely caused by his shots. I started to notice that it started getting smaller and eventually dissappeared. :) |
its probably from her distemper shot. Rabies vaccines are suppose to go in their right thigh so if there is a reaction A) the vet will know which vaccine it was, and B) its given low on the thigh so the leg can be taken off if god forbid the injection site produces a cancerous mass (No one panic, this is more common in cats from what i've experienced. much rarer in dogs). A lot of vets give the distemper in the right shoulder. |
ohh My dads dog did the same thing and it was really sore...I hope she feels better soon. |
My Pebbles got a rabies shot today and is getting the distemper shot on tues. I will have to watch for that. I hope your little baby is fine. Let us know if it goes down. |
Ranger had an injection site reaction to his rabies booster several months ago. The lump stayed there for weeks, and then the skin died and fell off like a big scab. He now has a perfectly circular BLACK patch of hair over the affected area. I hope it eventually blends into his normal coat color- looks like I dyed him! |

Just took little Dudley in today for that same thing. The vet said it could be there even as long as a month. Scared me when I found it because it felt as big as a dime. Just the results of giving the rabies in the shoulder area. |
The same thing happened to June. After her distemper and rabies shot, she had a little reaction and was vomiting, lethargic, etc. I phoned the vet's emergency service (we went to vet after my classes, at about 16h30) and they said that it is normal to have a slight reaction. Then, a few days later I felt the bump. It is still there, but it is definitely getting smaller. It will probably be gone in a few days or weeks. I read somewhere that the bumps can stay for years. Luckily, I don't think that is true. Just massage it a little. Good luck. |
Baxter has a bald spot where he got his rabies and a lump. Now he gets his rabies in the same spot every year. Thinking of moving to a 3 year shot. The vet gave me a sheet explaining the reaction to the shot. Wish I had kept it so that I could post it. |
