Vet tells me Coco is obese!!! My baby Coco has very short little legs, so he looks chubby yes but obese no way!!! Now I'm upset and I want to cry. My baby is not Obese!!! He only weighs 7.2lbs. They also told me this morning that my Pebbles is chubby What??? she is only 5.2lbs. She's a tiny little thing. They are both going for their tooth extractions on Tues. I free feed. I only fill the bowl maybe once a day. It's not a very bug bowl at all. They just kind of pick whenever they want. I feed them Royal Canin Low Fat (trixie--pancreatitis) And Health extention holistic little bits. They tell me they only want me to feed them Once a day!!! How can I just pick up the bowl and then they won't eat until the next whole day. They only just pick now. They will be hungry.:( I think I will go cry now!! |
It all has to do with their structure and the body condition scale. However, obese or not, I would never recommend feeding a Yorkie just once a day. Twenty-four hours is much too long between feedings and, in my opinion, it is not a good idea at all. You can feed the amount that the vet wants you to but split it between two or three meals daily instead... |
I'm sure you will get lots of good advice on here like Ellie May gave you. If the vets comments still bother you, I think I would take them to another vet. Just don't tell the vet about the obese comments and see if he/she thinks they are healthy and normal. My Yorkie is a "teapot"...she's 14 pounds (from a #6 mother and a #4 father, go figure). She's not skinny, but I can put my thumbs on her spine and count her ribs...so she's not fat in my book. Just because vets have a diploma on the wall doesn't mean they know Yorkies !!!! Don't let people like that upset you. |
1 Attachment(s) i know its never nice to hear that your pets are fat. A lot of people just don't see it in their own pets. Working as a vet tech i'd be in the room with the vet and the clients. When the vet would tell the owners their pets were a bit on the chubby side they would look shocked when clearly any one else could see they were indeed overweight. Take a picture of each of your pets standing above them and looking down. you can post here if you like to get other opinions. Looking at them from above you should be able to clearly see a larger chest that dips into a waist. if there is no distinction between chest and waist then your pet is overweight. i attached a pic of morgan so you can see what i mean |
I just looked at your babies pictures! First, HOW CUTE!!! If these pics are current, I think your babies look great! I would recommend Ellie May's advice. Maybe split your feedings up morn and evening. |
I recently took Lulu to the vet and they said she is overweight. She weighs seven pounds, but she has very short legs. She eats very small amounts 2-3 times a day, but she seems to eat the most at night, maybe that's the problem. I am now trying to watch what she eats. |
Aw, don't feel bad because your yorkie is porky. ;) They are so small that even a tiny little bit of weight adds up. kalina82 lists a good method for determining whether your pet is overweight. Other methods are: look at your pet from the side. The stomach should be higher than the ribs (may be hard to tell if there is a lot of fur). You can also run your hand along your yorkie's side. The ribs should not be sticking out, but you should be able to feel them easily. Pets are cute even if they need more exercise. :) |
3 Attachment(s) Here is the top view of coke peb and trix, tell me what you think. Attachment 284581 Attachment 284582 Attachment 284583 |
Judging from the pictures i'd have to say that Trixie is looking good but i'm sorry to say that i have to agree with your vet. i'm sorry, don't get mad at me, i know you don't want to hear it. Coco looks like she has some extra padding around the rib cage and there is barely any difference between chest and waist. Pebbles looks the same way but not as round as coco. the since he's laying down tho its a little harder to tell. What i would do is feed them twice a day. Give them each a set amount so you know what each is eating. Look at the bag of food they are eating and use the smallest amount listed for their size. Since your not sure how much they are eating right now you really don't have a guideline so use the bag at first. If you notice that there isn't any weight loss, or if there is a weight gain you can cut back on the food a little bit more. You can also give filling treats like green beans to add more fiber. Just remember if you are going to add the green beans to their kibble you need to cut back a little more on the kibble so they are getting the right amount. For trixie since she is a good weight you don't have to feed the lowest amount, you can chose a middle number and see how she does with that amount (weight gain or loss) and then adjust if necessary. |
I think calling them obese is a little harsh, it's not like they have a spare tire around their waist! but is does seem like Trix is the slimmer of the three. |
if you line up the three pictures with trixie's in the middle you'll be able to see the difference between them all and notice that the others are rounder then trixie. Also remember that these guys are tiny so an extra pound on them is like 10 pounds on us |
Oh sorry, I didn't mean it to sound that way, I was typing the same time as you, and when you read it in order it looks like I am not in agreement with you. Oops. |
Oh! Don't have hurt feelings!! It is true though, people get so defensive about their babies and the vets are only trying to help. Even a tiny bit of weight goes a long way on these guys. I love your babies, but Coco does look a little chunky and Pebbles looks a little chunky too. I just went through the whole LP surgery thing with Ranger so it was stressed over and over how it will be imperative that he does not ever get heavier than he is now. I can feel ribs on him fairly easily. Maybe a walk around the block once a day would help? Or some extra playtime? I don't think they are obese, just a bit chubby but very well loved! I hope this didn't hurt your feelings- I know you care about your babies and it is shocking to hear the word obese. Sheesh, I can't imagine feeding a yorkie only once per day  |
I guess I'm a typical Italian mama. I just want everyone to be full. manga!!! This is going to be tricky because they are used to just eating when they feel like it. If I put the food down how long do I keep it there? I measured their food bowl and they are getting 10oz a day in the bowl. Mind you all three eat out of this bowl. I haven't been giving them any treats because since Trixie was diagnosed with pancreatitis a few weeks ago I havent given them any. They get plenty of exercise. They run and chase eachother in the backyard. They are like cats, they stalk eachother then charge. It's hysterical. Of course iIwant them to be healthy and live forever so I will do anything for them. I know they are a little chubby but to blurt out obese I was sad. I guess I'm as overprotective with them as I am with my 4 kids. Makes me sad when someone talks bad about them  Thanks for your help and advice. |
Hmm, I think they should all have their separate bowls. if they are all eating from the same one then one could scarf down more than the others, and the "fluffy" one will still be getting more. |
