Three legged running? Sometimes when Oscar is full tilt, running full speed, I will notice him lift his right rear leg from time to time. Has anybody else seen this in their Yorkie? Is it normal or might he have a potential problem? My vet gave him a very thorough leg check at about 3.5 months and found no problems with a physical exam...not sure why he does this. He does not give any indications that he is in any sort of pain. I only notice it outside when he is running for all he is worth. Oscar's Mom |
I would get that checked out. It can be a sign of injury or luxating patella. They don't generally hold one leg up unless it's uncomfortable to use it. |
That is true...maybe the best option is to request an xray next time he goes for a check up....Hopefully it won;t be anything serious..maybe he just thinks running for 4 legs is too easy and wants to try something "wilder":D |
I had one of my females do this, almost like she was skipping. I was just for sure she had luxating patella. She is one of my breeding dogs and just came of age and I raised her from a baby, so I was pretty upset, I was looking forward to breeding her and I wouldnt be able too. Xray was negative! Guess what it was?! A tiny burr. I let my dogs play outside alot in the summer months and a little burr bush was at the side of the kennel I hadnt seen. The sharp little burr was lodged deep between two toes and I couldnt see it from the hair. Once removed she was okay. One damned expensive burr ! :D :) :cool: :eek: |
archie did this too. I thought it was luxating patella but the vet confirmed that it wasn't. Archie was playing very roughly with a bigger dog and he got a sprain or strain in his leg. He let me touch his leg, etc., and it showed up more when he was running around. He was better after the vet did something with his leg, and gave us some anti inflammatory medicine. Also, he sometimes doesn't fully use one foot when he's outside because of the salt on the ground from the snow. |
Schatzie did this too. (still does) She had an xray that confirmed Legges Perthes disease. Surgery corrected the problem and should use all four legs constantly within 6 months or later. She pretty much uses 4 now except when she's running. If the condition continues on Oscar I would recommend having an xray done just to rule out any major problems. The onset to LP is 4-9 months or so of age. It is not usually seen at an earlier age of pup. |
