Protein? Kidney Problems? Dog Food? Ok this is all new to me. I have been seeing that a lot of puppys are haing kidney trouble. I have read that it CAN be caused by to much protein. How much is to much? Right now Roxy is on a mix of Life's Abundance and Eukanuba Puppy. I have a ton of food but plan to wean her of the EP when I am out. How much protein is in the EP? I know Lifes Abundance is 26%........I also heard that it is genetic. I know one of Roxy's siblings from another litter has kidney problems but they only had the same dad so I dont know if that calls for concern or not. |
If you are concerned, have blood work done: CBC and Serum Bile Acid Test, along with a urinanalyse ;) |
I personally wouldn't feed a food that 26% protein and yes high protein foods are directly related to liver issues in small breeds. You should be able to find the protein content for EP on the bag or find their site on line. |

There's not a concern for 'too much protein' unless your dog has already existing kidney, liver or pancreas disease. A high protein does not cause the issues. It is important though that the protein come from a high-quality source. Here's a good read on protein The Dog Food Project - Is too much protein harmful? |

Im glad you saw this, thanks. I dont want to panic for nothing. |
Ann (Wylie's Mom) just posted a link to a terrific paper that has so much information on this subject. Check out her new thread! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ite-paper.html |
If there is concern because of a littermate maybe you should get your furbaby tested and also research dog foods. By the way she is adorable! |
I don't think 26% is all that high, and you should be totally OK. :) But if you're concerned about pre-existing kidney issues, get her tested. |
