pancreatitis in my 6yr old yorkie Hello. I am new to this site, but reading previous posts has been very helpful. My name is Hilary. I have a 6 1/2 year old yorkie named Cali Bella who is the love of my life. About four days ago Cali was acting very strange when we got home. She would not move, even for a treat! I took to her to a vet right next door to where we live who kinda dismissed it and said maybe she hurt her back, gave us pain meds and said come back in a week! Well, I was not having that..I knew if she wasnt better by morning we would go see her usual vet. The next morning she started throwing up..so of course we took her in. The did an xray then blood work and said it is has all the signs of being pancreatitis. We immediately took her Animal Emergency. So far, 3 days later, they have done 2 plasma transfusions, upped her pain meds to the highest one and she of course is on an IV. She is still not eating and as of this morning they want to do an ultrasound. I don't think I have to tell anyone on this board how much this hurts. Cali Bella is my sidekick and babygirl. I love this yorkie with all my heart and knowing she is in pain breaks my heart. She was on the Urinary SO diet and got very little table food ( I know now what a mistake that was). I know you all love your yorkies and ask for your prayers for my sweet Cali. Also, anyone been or going through this, I would love to know your story.. I am a patient person but not when it comes to my Cali! I want her better! I have been praying and praying that after this long she would be. Please Pray! |
My dexter had this and almost died and had one plasma transfusion:( did she get a fatty treat within 24 hrs of getting this? What is fat content on the diet as dex is now on 8% fat diet. I know your pain i was there and it was a year before he was back on track as he relapsed as vet fed wrong food. DO NOT LET VET GIVE YOU HILL'S I/D :( do ultra z/d if you have to do vet food. Once they get it - it is real easy to get it again so you have to be very strict with diet. Dex is on purina ha and has not had an episode in 3 years. He just had blood work on a 12 hr fast and his triglycerides were a little high so that told me he naturally had alot of fat in his blood so any extra put him over the edge. I am very strict with him. Alot of times like with him he has ibd in small intestines and cannot tolerate potato based diets as white potato is inflammatory to intestines and then triggers the pancreas. hang in there so glad you trusted your gut and i would never go back to vet that just shrugged it off as first thing our vet did was xray for blockage and blood work and immediately knew I personally would not do the ultrasound as the blood work is very specific and i paid for three ultrasounds that said yep the pancreas is inflamed - uh duh that is what the blood work said :( so i felt it a waste. The most accurate is the spec cpli for pancreas and tli is for epi not pancreatitis. They should have an inhouse now that does cpli right there because if you have to send to lab it will take 3-4 days to come back - the amylase and lipase give them a little idea but not always perfect test for pancreas but the cpli is the most accurate test so if you want to keep cost down stick to the blood tests and avoid ultrasound as out here they were $400 each and that racked up a 1200 bill for me and did not get a whole lot out of it |
My yorkie is 8 and has a slight case of pancreatitis; it really helps to make him homemade dog food, and eliminate fat from his diet. |
Thankyou for your replies.. I am beyond heartbroken to say, I lost my Cali Bella yesterday. Some people may say she was 'just a dog'.. to me, she was my sidekick, my angel, my babygirl and puppylove-of-my-life. There are not words to express how much I loved her and how greatly she is missed. They did a ultrasound and found an abscess on her abdomen that erupted. The vet explained, she would have a 25% chance of survival with how extreme her case was. Even if she made it, there would be therapy and it is a painful thing to go through. I could not do that to my baby. It was the hardest thing I had ever done in my life. No one was loved and adored like my baby Bella. I would do anything on this earth for her, and I did.. her whole life. I, by nature tend to be selfish at times. I can honestly say I never had one selfish moment when it came to my Cali Bella. In the end, what was best and right for her, was letting her go. The grieving process is going to be long.. I know this. That little yorkie was the biggest bright spot in my life..and Il ike to believe, I was hers. We had an amazing bond that often promted people to say "are you SURE you didn't give birth to that dog?" She had this amazing way of knowing just what I needed, she gave me so much love, and it was returned to her every minute of everyday. There will not be a day I don't miss her and love her with all my heart. |
I am so sorry for your loss. My Yorkie is 8 and I pray every night that nothing bad happens to him ever again. He's had three close calls, and I was a basket case each time. I can only imagine how awful you must feel. Anyone who says "she was only a dog" really doesn't have a clue. |
I am so sorry for your loss :( |
