tiny brown specks-fur/skin Latte has been scratching a bit lately, in spite of daily cortelone, and I gave her a haircut and could see tiny brown specks in her fur and on her skin near her little armpits. They didn't move, so it's not a bug, but is it flea "dirt"? Should I give her a flea shampoo? |
Try putting a little bit of water on it. If it turns red, it's flea poop, which includes some blood. You can also try running a flea comb over her and see if you get any fleas or eggs. |
Thanks Thanks, but I tried that and they did not get red or pink. She just had allergies, I guess-still- and the heat probably doesn't help. I appreciate your response, though.:p |
There could be other parasites, such as mites. I would get it checked out by a vet. I hope those nasty itchies go away soon. :( |
it is a bacteria type infection -- rub organic coconut oil on the area and put a long sleeve tshirt to cover it up as they love the taste of coconut oil - coconut is antifungal and antibacterial -- i have an allergy dog and she itches her elbows raw so she wears tshirts all the time and it soothes her and protects her skin from pollens |
Also, check btwn her toes and in her ears to see if there are issues/specs there as well. |
Sounds like flea dirt to me or dried blood from scratching. You might be looking for fleas but not seeing them. They are sneaky and fast little rodents. I truely hate them. But it's always good to have it checked by the vet and even if it's nothing serious it will make you feel better. |
I agree I think it's fleas too, and I'm just not seeing them. I'll stop and get her some flea stuff on the way home this morning. Since she's doing all her scratching on the back end, I'm pretty convinced. When I take her into the vet's Monday to have her teeth cleaned I'll clue them into be on the lookout. By the way, does anyone use BioSpot? It's less expensive and seems to work for me. |
I don't know if you saw the thread on Bio-Spot or not. Some people are having problems with it causing some severe reactions. I used it a long time ago on my daughters husky and it didn't do a thing. If your not sure if it's fleas I'd try an organic flea shampoo or some Dawn dishwashing liquid (you have to use the blue original one). It kills them on contact and then you'll know if it's fleas for sure before applying any harsh treatments. I read a thread here that said to make a collar with the Dawn around the neck so that when your bathing the fleas don't all move up to their heads. |
fleas I did read the Biospot thread, and went and bought Frontline Plus. I'm that'll do the trick. It's that time of year! Now, I have to get her through her dental cleaning on Monday!! |
