peppermint oil and water to repel fleas... Morning All!! I started this thread the other day and have the amount of oil to water ratio.....My Mom contacted a Holistic Vet and asked about a holistic pet shampoo that would help with fleas, mosquitoes, ticks and any other typed of biting insects. This vet told her NOT to go buy anything special....He told her to mix peppermint oil with water (in a spray bottle)....spray and towel then wipe it over the animal...under the neck, legs, belly...he said this will repel all that I mentioned above...We are going to Maine on Wednesday and taking the furgirls with us (of course!)..The mosquitoes there are HORRIBLE!! I am going to try this up in Maine...will let you all know how it works! 15 drops of peppermint oil 1 cup of water put in a spray bottle, shake well and spray on a rag then wipe them down making sure to get their bellies and under legs...then the rest of the body...My Mom is in Maine and has been using this...Callie hasn't had 1 flea or tick on her and the mosquito bite her....we are all going up there tomorrow and staying until Saturday...I plan on trying it...(although the girls don't have fleas) it also repels other biting insects...As I said before...My Mom spoke with a holistic vet and this is what he told her to do...Seems to be working for her!! I say GO THE NATURAL ROUTE!! LEAVE THE CHEMICALS ALONE!!! |
That is so cool!! Can't wait to see how it works on your trip. |
So far my Mom said it's working!!! I HATE putting chemicals on the girls!! I have seen several threads on "flea help" here lately....I have posted this twice and also posted a flea/tick repellent recipe that another Yt'er had posted quite a while ago (I saved that recipe)...I know there are A LOT of members here and the threads get pushed out pretty fast!! I will certainly post when I get back, and let everyone know how it worked for the girls! |
I wonder if it would work on humans. |
Thanks for the ratio information...Just one more question...Do you put this on them everytime they go out, once a day, or what?...I live in S.E. Texas, Apple is on frontline plus, I've treated the yard and house, and she STILL gets fleas...We do walk in the neighborhood, so I know she picks them up there too, but I still see them in my own backyard!!! I just treated her on July 3rd, 11 days ago, and I'm still seeing them on her :( In fact, she needs a bath, but I'm afraid to bathe her, because I don't know what works well w/frontline...I can't wait for the winter to see a slow down in the flea population . |

omg where do I get the peppermint oil? at the craft store? because we've tried everything and had the house professionally sprayed and the babies still have fleas:(...they are like super fleas and I need to find they're cryptonite.lol I'm going to try this |
Try the healthfood store or a kitchen shop. You want to use pure essential oils, not synthetics. |

oh how funny, i WAS at the end of the post. oops. well anyway. i'm searching the threads, because the woman from whom i adopted Smokey said she Frontlined him on oct 20th... but i think he still has fleas, and i'm checking to see if i can frontline him again, or try something else. i may see if i can get peppermint oil... man that would make him smell soooo good too! i can't wait to read about all your results. :) |
You can apply it again. It's supposed to be used once a month and that's about where your at. I've had to reapply about every month. All summer I've noticed we only seem to make it about 3 weeks before I start seeing fleas again. I try to stretch it as far in time as I can. Roxie is allergic to flea saliva so it's not a good thing. Even after the fleas are dead the poor thing itches for days from even just one bite. I would prefer the more natural remedies but it doesn't kill off and keep new ones from being born like the frontline or advantage does. It's getting worse now that we are due for a freeze. The fleas are looking for warm places right now and jumping on the poor dogs. Plus the yard it loaded with squirrels and they bring tons of fleas into the yard. Good luck, hope this helps. just make sure you use the right dosage for his weight. |
