Mice poison and dogs Hi there, Has anyone ever heard of a Yorkie, or any dog eating a dead mouse? I don't know if that's too broad a question? The reason I ask is that I live in a six floor apartment building and the whole place has had a problem with mice ever since these 4 different apartments started undergoing renovation. Apparently an apartment on the 2nd floor and on the fourth floor had an exterminator put poison in the apartments. In the last two weeks I've found two dead mice, one of which my Yorkie, Buffy found and I think, deposited in the middle of the living room. It was intact but a few weeks ago she ate part of the glue of a mouse glue trap AND possibly part of a dead mouse. Disgusting i know, AND i'm a bad Mommy for not realizing I had left a trap in the closet. Anyway, she survived the eating of the glue (and mouse?). But now I'm concerned she might start chomping on some of the mice cadavers piling up in my place. Do you think I need to be concerned about this? I spoke to the exterminator and the poison is: Ditrac, active ingredient/diphacinone which cause anti-coagulant problems in dogs. I know what signs to look for, but I wonder if I should send Buffy to another place until the mouses leave the house? Or will they ever? Help and, thanks!! mb |

I wish I could be of some help. I'm not sure about that. Just keep an eye on your little one. At least you do know what to look for so you will know if you need to rush her to the vet. I hope that you don't have to. Please keep us posted. |
We live in the country and I have lots of knowledge about mice in the homes. Dogs can die if they eat a poisoned mouse!!! Just keep an eye on them, and don't let them get any. I'm pretty sure the glue traps won't hurt them, but just use the regular traps where the dogs can't get at them. If you do suspect that your dog has eaten part of one (dead mouse, or even if it's alive), take them IMMEDIATELY to the vet. They will bleed to death internally. We always have mice, it's an ongoing problem here. We use the traps and throw them away. It kills them quickly. The glue traps kill them SLOWLY. And please make sure that your pets can't get at them (in a cabinet where they can't get at) or under a dresser that they can't get under. Good luck! |
If she gets one that has died of poison, it can sure kill her! I do not use poison IN the house. Only outside. In the house I use the glue traps and put them in one of those see thru shoe boxes with a little hole cut in it so Brina can't get to it. She got caught in a glue trap once - and you don't want to have to clean up that mess, trust me. The glue traps have "bait", but not poison, but they will sure stick the dog to it too! Like 3 out of 4 feet for mine. Now I have a "Rat Zapper" (electrifies those suckers) and she can't get to the dangerous part. Love that one! Oh, the joys of country living! |
We live in a nice area. However, during the summer months, we have a rat/mouse problem. It's totally disgusting. I guess they come in to find water. Anyway, this summer, I found a dead rat...just about all ate and chased Rebel down with 2 dead mice. I know that the rat was eaten because before I went to Vegas, I was telling my hubby that my dogs stunk like somthing dead. They would try to kiss me...EEEEEWWWWW! Then, I found it....corroded and all that was left was a skull, some fur and a tail. GGGGRRRROOOOSSSSS!!!!!!! |
If you put poison outside, the mice can eat it and it takes a while to kill them, and they can come in your house and run around and die there. I would not use it anywhere. And what about that rat zapper? Where do you put it so the pets can't get at it? Where did you get it and how much did it cost? Does it always work? If it works, I'm always interested in new and innovative ways to get rid of the little suckers! Thanks for the info. |
Yikes!!! I would be very nervous if I were you. I almost lost a Dalmation one time because she ate a dead mouse that had been poisioned. She had to have large amount of Vitamin K to help her blood clot because she was basically bleeding to death. I can't remember what else she had to have. After I got her back from the vet, she had to eat liver for the high potein. I almost lost her and she weighed around 85 pounds. I would think it would be a very bad situation for a little Yorkie. |
Rat Zapper info... Quote:
Here's the web site: http://www.ratmousezapper.com/ They WORK. |
Oh, I forgot. I put it under the sink, and I put one behind the wardrobe. They are about 8 inches long, by 4 inches square opening. Not that big and the dogs can't get in it from either end. |
Thanks for the info. I did look it up and I am definitely going to get one. Sounds great. Thanks again. |
