Pancreatitis My little Yorky has been just diagnosed with pancreatitis. Does anyone have advice on diet or has experienced this disease with their Yorky? It breaks my heart when he doesn't feel well. Thanks for any help!:aimeeyork |
My trixie had a bout of this a few weeks ago. Sooo sad. She was in the hospital for 2 nights. It was so heartbreaking to see her so mushy. I almost lost her to this. The advice I have is only very low fat food and treats. NEVER let anyone give her anything off of their plate. Anything can set this off again. I am feeding Royal Canin Low Fat. I get it from the vet. Thank goodness she loves it because she is a picky eater. Give fresh fruits and veggies as treats. I don't buy them anymore. I also was so scared that my other 2 will not get any fatty foods either. I know if this had been my Pebbles (only 4lbs) I would have lost her. My Trix is 10.6 lbs and she lost about a pound and a half through all of this. She is a strong baby that's what saved her. Sending prayers for your little one. Just stick to low fat or no fat and you'll be fine. There are many knowledgeable people here who have also gone through this and I am still learning myself how to avoid this and deal with it for my Trix. You are in very good hands here. |
I almost lost my dex to this as well 3 years ago - he is on purina ha hydrolized diet and no more episodes since 7/06 - he almost died and had to have a plasma transfusion - the whole ordeal over a year cost about 10k to save his life so please no fatty foods for yorkies. It can lead to diabetes or epi if they get it over and over again so not good if they keep getting it at all. Alot of times it can be tied to ibd in small intestines. Next blood panel when they do it make sure to do a 12 hr fast one and see if triglycerides are high as dogs with high triglycerides are more prone to pancreatitis as they have a high amount of fat in blood already |

it is a hydrolized soy diet but i would stick to what works and not borrower trouble -- this food is 8% fat and works well for ibd and pancreatitis. Dex has ibd as well in small intestine and he cannot eat any food with white potato in it |
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and for your kind thoughts and prayers. I am so happy that your Trixie was able to make a full recovery and will continue to lead a happy and healthy life with her other buddies! Best of life to you all! |
