Micro Chip Just wondering what your thoughts are? Lexi will be going in on Tuesday to have her teeth pulled as she has 2 sets of the canines. She is 8 months old and they haven't fallen out. My vet can micro chip her at the same time. I have mixed feelings about this....can it cause any problems as she is small. Her length is probably where she gets her weight from as her bones are very tiny. I thing she is getting close to 4 lbs now. Will we feel the chip? Will she feel the chip and bother her? I understand it is painless and no larger than a grain of rice. My breeder micro chips all new puppies before she delivers them to their new homes. I know that vets and the Humane Society recommends it so I don't think it would harm a puppy. |
I think it is one of the best things you can do for your dog. It is a small, tiny little grain they slip right under their skin. Mia had it done when she was spayed. Recently I rescued a dog, when the dog was neutered they also microchipped him. If your dog is microchipped, should you get separated, it can be returned to you. If someone steals your dog, if your dog gets lost, if your partner gets mad and takes it to the pound, you will have proof it is your dog. Recently I have seen all three situations. I am so glad both of mine have chips, It is heart breaking to have no recourse. |
All 3 of mine arw chipped. My pebbles is about 4lbs or so. yes I can feel it under her skin. It doesn't bother her at all. I don't know how to steer you with this one. I don't know if I would do it again to them. I just recently changed vets and I brought 2 of mine there (different days different problem)anyway they only asked if they were chipped but never checked to see if they were really mine. I also had to bring trixie to the hospital and they didn't care either. So what is the sense of having it if no one checks it. You also have to pay a fee each year to keep them registered. I don't know what I would do ifI had to do over again. It would be nice to hear other opinions. Good luck with the surgery. Poor baby. Hope all goes well and she has a speedy recovery. |
Thanks Thanks for all your comments I always appreciate everyones opinion and everyone is so supportive thanks. I too have mixed feelings but I think it will be worth it. Lexi goes everywhere with us and I guess you just never know. I appreciate your comments if know one is checking...but hopefully someone would and will check. Just FYI last week when I went to the vet, they checked the chip. They said they just wanted to make sure his numbers were correct. I was just so glad they were checking. |
Glad to hear they are checking too...do you have to pay a registration fee every year? Does it bother your furbaby? |
I had Amelia chipped when she was having her spay surgery. she didn't even seem to know it was done and I haven't been able to feel it and I really looked. :) |
I had Missy microchipped with her spay and tooth extraction. We've had NO problems and she's 3.5 lbs. |
Not for me I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but I don't go for micro-chips no matter how worthy the cause. The same arguments that you can make for having animals chipped will lead to mandatory human chipping down the road. Not a world I want to live in. First it will be animals, then small children,then adults. Big government snooping around-no way. |
I manage a vet clinic and we recommend microchips. Both of my boys are chipped. We have been able to find several missing dogs for owners and a couple of them ended up in shelters out of town after getting away from their owners and the chips helped find the owners. We ALWAYS chip check dogs that come in that have been found or if a new owner brings an older dog and has no information about it. When sold the chips are registered to the veterinarian that buys them. We use AVID and there is no yearly fee. If the owner wants to change it and have it put in their name there is a fee to do that. Most owners don't because they figure that it is easier for people who have found their dog to get hold of us since our phones are answered 24 hours a day. These chips do not contain personal information or are not able to track an animals location. They just contain a number that is then traced back to the owner of the chip. |

Our breeder has her Yorkies microchipped before they go to their new homes. It was one of the many features that attracted us to her. We knew for our puppy's safety and well-being we would want her micro-chipped. Ours does not have a fee associated with it. Our papers at the time of the purchase had her chip number on it and when we went for our wellness check at our vet, the chip was checked and the records were verified. I expected no less since that chip may save our puppy's life should she ever wander away. Taffy's insurance also gives a percentage discount because she is micro-chipped. This was not something we sought but it is a nice added benefit of having her micro-chipped. |

I think it is a good thing as I couldn't bear to think what we would do if we lost her or she lost us. Hopefully, she would end up in the right hands and with her chip she would be returned home. The advantages of microchipping far outweigh the disadvantages. Should anything ever happen, you will be so glad you chipped her. |
I have micro-chipped all my yorkies and they do not have any problems. It is better than wearing a collar! My vet told me that dogs usually do not have any problems with it. Cats could, but no problem for dogs. |
Well, Lexi was chipped today :) She doesn't seem to be having any trouble at all they did it when they put her under to pull what we thought were 4 extra canines...poor little thing had 7 teeth pulled. She is doing great tonight no problems at all even wants to eat a little something she is such a brave little girl and we are very proud of her...Hugs Cheryl & Lexi:aimeeyork |
