Giardia Starr has bloody diarrhea, again. The first time was a little over a month ago and I took her to the vet for it. He said something about the parasites lying dormant in pups from the time they're at their first home, then something triggers them and causes the diarrhea. He gave her a shot and a bottle of pills. I've been reading about the medication she was on. It has a 60% to 70% effective rate and some serious concerns about liver damage. If Starr is eating something in the backyard or picking up the parasite in the water in the yard, what do I do to stop it? I don't want her to be sick every other month. Then again, I gave her a rib bone on the 4th of July and she's never had people food ... Help. |

Metronizadol All the vet told me was that the bloody diarrhea was caused by giardia and that she'd probably been carrying it since I got her from my sis. He said it's very common and that it lies dormant unless they manage to drink water that's been standing or water that has bacteria from other animals and such things as that. I have quite a population of squirrels and rabbits (and possibly moles). I'm not sure how to keep her from drinking the standing water. |
When I brought maddie home, the first night i noticed the bloody/mucous stools, took her to the vet, it was giardia, it was a nightmare. she was put on flagyl, i was able to get liquid version, i put her in the bathroom with a baby gate until treatment was done, when she stooled i cleaned it immediatly, i whiped her bottom with babywhipes, after ten days of that she still had loose stools and was positive, so another ten days of meds, and by the way these meds cause them to not want to eat so i had to force feed with a syringe every few hours because at 16wks she was only 1lb 2oz. They also contract it from other infected dogs stools, it does lie dormant in the intestional lining and stress such as a new home "activates" it. So in a nutshell good hygeine, clean stool immediatly with a spray bleach, whipe your puppies nose and paws and make sure your dog is eating and drinking, sorry this was so long:D:D:D:D:D:D:D |
You will have to be diligent about cleaning everything she comes in contact with for several days. A 10% bleach solution should be used on the floor, beddings, toys, etc. Baby wipes on her feet, belly and hiney after every single potty help lots. Giardia can be found pretty much everywhere. Birds are carriers and it is in the droppings that spores spread. You will need another round of Metronidazole/Flagyl. The liquid form seems to be much more effective to make sure they are getting what they need. At least 10 days of this if this is her 2nd flare up. You will need to re-test stools 30 days after completing the meds. She can become anorexic, so make sure she continues to eat and drink and force food/liquid by syringe as need be. Also, starting her on a good probiotic supplement can help her tummy/intestines stay healthy as giardia can leave scarrring. The supplement should be continued for a long while if not forever. |
