Heartgard
 
Has anyone had a problem with giving using Heartgard for their small puppy? Is there something else I can use that will give my baby the same protection?

Heartgard is pretty safe but I and many other small dog owners prefer Interceptor.

We use Interceptor. The heartgard upset the tummy on my little one.

Does Interceptor protect them from the same things as heartgard? Is it just made by a different company?

It is supposed to protect against one more worm than Heartgard.
Interceptor is made by Novartis and its active ingredient is milbemycin oxime.
Heartgard is made by Merial and its active ingredient is Ivermectin. Heartgard Plus adds Pyrantel for intestinal worms, so it is the one that is comparable to Interceptor.

Do most vets carry the Interceptor? Is it a pill or chewable? This sounds like the way to go. My little guy(11 weeks) got sick the night I gave it to him but I wasn't sure if it was from his new food (Innova) or from the heartgard. His stomach still is not right and the poor little guy has been crying for 3 days. He has been checked out by 3 vets and had a lot of test their not sure what happened. I'm leaning toward the problem being the heartgard so I thought it couldn't hurt to look into something else. Thanks for your help I really appreciate it.:)

Some carry it but not all.
I "think" it is chewable but Ellie swallows it whole.
It is a very small pill.
Your vet can write a prescription and you can take it to another vet who carries it in your area. You can also order it online with a script but that can be questionable because of all the counterfeit products out there.

Are all puppies suppose to be given these products? The vet never mentioned it for Bailey, should he be taking this?, I have no idea!

If you have mosquitoes in your area that carry heartworms, then yes.
Some areas don't have a big problem, so sometimes it isn't given although if there were any cases at all, I'd probably give it.

Thanks, I go to the vet Thursday with Bailey for his shots, I'll ask about it then.
