eating the same thing every day i know it is very important for our little yorkies to eat a healthy diet but how do they stand to eat the same thing every day . i could not imagine having to do that day after day, so how do our little babies do it??? does anyone vary the food they feed their babies for a little variety. and if so how often do you do it so they still have regular potty's and stay healthy. thanks for any points of view on this. :) |
I free feed my little ones kibble, but I feed them two small meals a day of a meat/vegge/grain mixture. I constantly vary the meats, and then for treats everyday I add in things like yogurt, which is incredibly good for them, small cheese bites, soymilk, etc. The more varied nutrionally dense foods you can get them to eat the better. Only kibble everyday would be torture for mine. :p |
If you'd like your dogs to have more variety, you can definitely do a rotation diet. Or you could also add some canned food to their kibble, and rotate kinds/flavors. |
thanks guys you guys have really helped me. sammy is my first dog and im still trying to get the best food for him ( i use kibbles also ). the cheese, yogurt and kibbles, changed around, is a great start for me. i have not given him canned food because i thought the hard food was better for cleaning his teeth. he has a little tarter build-up and im working like the dickens to get rid of it with brushing twice a day. but some canned food once in awhile will be a nice change for him. perhaps i will mix a little in with his dry food. i am looking forward to going to the store now and getting him other things too eat. they sure keep us occupied with things to do dont they :D. |
One thing you can do is to stick with the same brand kibble yet swap up your main protein source. I feed Merrick Before Grain, typically Chicken. Harley also like the Buffalo, so I buy the little one pound bag of it often and I will mix it with the chicken some days or just feed the Buffalo by itself. This way, there is no transition time like with totally changing foods because all of the other ingredients are the same! If you use a brand of kibble that offers sample size bags it works out really well because you don't have to worry about something going stale before you use it up! Jeri and Harley |

Most dogs seem to do very well with no variety but I agree with you, it doesn't seem right to me either. Ellie eats homecooked and she has to eat the exact same thing everyday because these are the only ingredients that her body will tolerate right now. Awhile back, we switch up protein, grain and veggies regularly. You just have to be careful that you don't introduce your dogs to too many protein and grain sources because if there is every a food sensitivity, you will have no novel protein or grain sources to go to. If I had a larger dog I would feed kibble, however, unless there was a medical issue that made it unhealthy, I would offer canned food or small amounts of homecooked often. |
I agree...the same thing everyday....YUCK! However, I went through an ordeal finding a food that Maddie could tolerate. CN offers three flavors and she does well with all them. I switch her flavors occasionally. I also add a few carrot bites or blueberries every now and then for a special treat. Good Luck! |
Mine eat the same dry every day but every morning they get different flavors of canned |
I feed the same brand of grain-free kibble all the time (Acana Provinicial), but rotate between their three different varieties (chicken, lamb, and fish) every couple of months. I'll also occasionally add a little bit of healthy human food to the meal as a bit of a treat-- things like a small bit of hard-boiled egg or raw baby carrots. |
