should I give them higher protein dog food? My three babies that are 6mths old, 2 of them weigh 6lbs. and one weighs 2lbs. They mostly eat boiled chicken and turkey meat. They free feed on Natural Balance small bits during the day, which they don't eat a lot of it. Well, they finally finished the bag of food. Should I buy something that has more protein in it, since Nat. Balance isn't high in protein so they will get the recommended amount. If so, which one do you recommend? |
If it is one of their puppy or all-life-stages foods, then it does contain adequate protein. If you think that dogs need more, then switch. :) How much meat are they getting a day though and how much dog food do they eat? |
They get chicken or turkey sometimes mixed with scrambled eggs in the morning and evening. I have tried putting canned dog food in it,but they won't eat it as good. Somedays they will eat the dry food and then somedays they won't touch it. I put about 2 cups on a bowl and it will last several days. |
I have read small dogs should not be on a high protein diet. I feed Lola Innova which contains 24% protein and she seems to like it. Also, you may want to consider switching from free feeding to a set schedule. They may be more incline to eat. Just my opinion :) Good luck |
If they are getting more than 10% homecooked per day, supplementation is a must. So you have a few options here. Go entirely homecooked with the help of a nutritionist, leave the food down and they will eat when they are hungry (this works for most but not all dogs because of hypoglycemic concerns, etc.), find a kibble that they like, find a canned food that they like that you can give or top the kibble with... |
Thanks, I am headed to Petco today, I will see what I can find. |
Here's the list of high quality dog foods..good luck http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...e-samples.html |
Snickers eats high protein everything, down to his snacks and potty treats! He is doing amazingly, but I think he is built for it. He eats: Nv Raw Medallions (1-2 per day) Evo kibble-by Innova, I LOVE this kibble. Free-fed, always out, 42% protein Evo biscuits as snacks (grainfree/high protein) Freeze dried Chicken for potty treats (whopping 80% crude protein) Fresh fruit as snacks as well He loves it all...I'm not having any eating problems with him and he devours all of it. If you feel your pups like meat (ie the chicken and turkey you give them) maybe you can consider a raw diet for them? I think their love for meat is why you're considering a high protein kibble? I think it might be good for your pups as well. Here are some other higher protein kibble choices if you go that route: Innova Evo Nature's Variety Instinct Wellness CORE Taste of the Wild Blue Buffalo Wilderness Good luck:) Snick & Viv |
Well, I went to Petco today and got a bag of Nat. Balance Pot. and Duck little bits and a bag of Royal Canin indoor puppy 27 they are little bits too. I gave them some and they ate it right up. They also like the dog food rolls Natural Balance. So, between the chicken and the turkey hopefully they are getting enough protein. I also got a bunch of treats that are healthy for them. |
I also feel Natural Balance is a little low on protein. We are currently feeding our dogs Nature's Variety Prairie chicken and rice formula which has 26 protein. They seem to like it and do well on it. It is also an ALS food. We have 5 dogs that range from a 12 yr old 117 lb Shepherd/Chow mix to a 5 month old 6 lb Yorkie pup. |
