Food, itching question. Several months ago I had problems with my guys itching (scratching their ears, licking/biting at their feet, etc.) so I switched them to Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish. The itching quickly subsided and pretty much went away all together. Now they have started itching again. Is it possible that they have come immune to this food and I switch them to another Natural Balance formula? ETA: And if I should switch, any suggestions for a formula? |
as a groomer i've been seeing a lot of dogs with allergies right now. its the change of the seasons. more pollen is flying around. lots of eat infections and itchy skin. when was the last time they had the itchies? did it happen to coincide with another seasonal change and the food change happened to be a coincidence? If the food change is unrelated to the season change then maybe they do have seasonal allergies as well as the past food allergies. i wouldn't change the food again. not a lot of time has passed for them to have become allergic to the new food. i think its something else other then the food. |
could it be environmental? when did itching begin (before you switched) I would go to Sweet Potato and Venison- Venison is an exotic meat and your dogs shouldn't have an allergy to it. |
I wanna say I switched their food sometime in the fall but I could be way off. They don't really go outside that often although they were at the beach a few days ago for a week. They would go to the beach for a bit every morning and evening. I washed them once or twice while we were there and once since we've gotten back. I think I'll just watch them and see how it goes. :) Thanks! |
i'd wait it out too for a little bit. you don't want to go switching foods for no reason if what they are eating is working for them. They could be itching from the sand, you know how hard it is to get that out of your own hair LOL imagine it all over your body. plus, even tho they don't go outside a lot the outdoor allergens still make it in your house. My morgan was always eating her feet and at first i suspected allergies. didn't matter what food she was on, she still itched. so after trying numerous things i went out and bough organic coconut oil. i add this to her food everyday and i've notice much less itching since she's been eating this. just a thought |
Yes, it could be the food but it is highly unlikely that an allergy developed this quickly. It is more likely something else. I would say environmental allergies but because they all have the problem, I'd also have to wonder about mites (which is unlikely or it wouldn't have went away before). |
