$650 for spay?
 

So I'm just wondering what others think... is $650 - $700 for a spay and pre-surgery bloodwork as outrageous as it seems!? Granted, I do live in Boston, which is an expensive city, but really? Man. That just seems crazy.

Thats definitely on the higher side. My Jewels spay was $110 but the vet didnt do presurgery bloodwork

I live in south florida and that isn't too much higher than some of the vets in this area. I would check the local humane societies and rescue groups. they usually do lower cost spays done by a well qualified vet who is donating thier time. Most of my animals have been done that way.

I just paid $375 for blood work, spay & microchip 2 weeks ago in S Florida. We have a spay shuttle that will do a spay for about $50.00 but there is no way I was going to use them. My vet also keeps the animals overnight & all the next day before you can pick them up so they can keep an eye on them.

I paid $275 for bloodwork and spay. I live in Connecticut and everything here seems to be over priced but my vet charges fair prices.

Mine was close to that too and Laci just got spayed and bloodwork and meds... Boston stinks our vetting is just outrageous!!:rolleyes:

That's high even for New York City.

I'm going to be looking at about 250-300$ for a spay/ blood work.

that is way too high. i paid about $300 for spay, microchip, and 6 baby teeth extractions. ..oh and i think a rabies vaccine too

I paid $125 with pre-surgery blood work. I live in Louisiana. $650 seems very, very high! Hope you can find it at a more reasonable price.

I just had Jemma to the vet today. While there I asked the fee for the pre op and spay. 632.00. Another vet told me 600.00 and I live in NJ YIKES:crazy:

That is way too much. I live in NYC and I paid $350 for Zoey's spay a year ago. That included everything.

Yeah, I really thought it seemed outrageous too. The thing is, I took her to a vet in Maine to be spayed and she had a reaction to the induction drug... not any fault of the (very reputable and professional) vet, just a weird reaction. But as you can imagine, I am so scared to have it done again, and I know that this veterinary clinic is amazing and will do a great job. I'm torn... I know and trust them, but the price is just so ridiculous. I guess I'll just see if I can find another place that has a good reputation for small dogs (she's only 2.8 lbs, that's another issue that worries me) that is more affordable. I just want my baby to be in the best hands possible. :(

Zoey was a little over 2lbs..not 2 1/2 and she did well. Have you checked your local Humane Society. Thing were very tough after I got Toby (hubby had gotten laid off) and my vet wanted $450 to neuter him. I knew I needed it done but definitly couldn't spare it at the time. I contacted the ASPCA and they did it for $58 with pain meds and they do the iso, iv and the pre-op blood work.

SOME humane societys do it for free if you are low income. Some do it for 100$... IF you bought the "puppy" plan at petsmart, the spay is free! its only 40$ per month its kinda like health insurance.

Way too high. A full blood panel goes for $100 dollars around here, and the spay maybe 200 that includes IV fluids...

$650 way too much...
 

That's way too much for a spay or neuter. I'm sorry but if you can get the same thing for a fraction of the price why spend all that money? I spent thousands and thousands on my Mastiff but I didn't have a choice with the type of surgeries (plus xrays all the time) that she needed and she would have suffered if we didn't fix her problems...so, no questions asked...we took care of her. That's why I spent so much money on specialist bills BUT for something so common as a spay and neuter...

Oops! I didn't realize you have to be lower income for the previous suggestion (I just read it)....not that they would ask but I'd save the other one for someone who really needs it...

I may be the only one that feels this way, but that is not too much.
A lot of vets do lower cost spay/neuter just so owners get it done.
That's great as long as they are following good protocol but not all vets offer such a great deal. Think of it this way. It is a major abdominal surgery...a hysterectomy. It is routine in that it is done all the time but it is not routine in that no abdominal surgery is that easy... If you can find a vet that you trust to do it cheaper, great. However, in my opinion, $600 for a major abdominal surgery with everything (blood work, IV, pain meds, etc.) is not unreasonable.

There are some organizations that offer it cheaper and some of those do a great job. Then some of them do line surgeries, use cheap anesthesia, don't do IVs, etc. So getting it done cheap is not always a deal.

That said, if my dog was under 3 pounds and had reacted to anesthesia before, I would go to a vet that I trusted and pay whatever they ask. If I questioned the vet's ability, I'd sooner skip the spay.

Ellie's spay was about $135 and then blood work. The office offered low cost spay/neuter without cutting corners. Her oral surgery was about $600.

My George was fixed ,2 teeth out, micro chipped and nails cut for $160.00 New Zealand dollars, granted I did shop around for a vet who has experience with Yorkies,(he has 1) and I had to travel to the next town but only 15 minutes away, the vet here wanted $250.00 so there is a big difference, it wasn't so much the money but someone i felt comfortable leaving my baby with, even then it was a stressful time for me and George

I paid $240 two years ago and was very happy with everything. I also included the microchip.

...The only place I have found cheaper in SF is spay/neuter clinics that to me, seem scary for Kaia's (less than 3 lbs at almost 6 months.) I was quoted $950ish for the bloodwork, procedure and medications.
