Please help with food I have a 10 week old puppy that needs to switch food. I bought Wellness yesterday but after reading the post on it decided to return it and try Innova but there are so many different kinds. Which one is good for a puppy. Do they have small bites for small breed puppies? The vet said also to get some canned food for puppies because his teeth are just coming in. Do they have a canned food for puppies? |
Which post did you read? I think Wellness is a good food, but every dog is different and likes different things or reacts differently to different food. But I think Wellness is a good brand, what did you read bad about it? However, I feed Jackson Innova and he loves it, I love it, so hopefully we will stick with it for a while to come! |
Well although I,m a newbie on here and, certainly a newbie to Yorkies, my Vet here suggested Orijen, which I had never heard of, and although my wee bhoy of only 7 weeks was a bit slow, he now seems to be adjusting well. Very high level, 75% of natural meats etc so it would seem to me it has all the right ingredients for my Yuriy.:D |
We feed Innova small bites (all life stages) They do have a puppy food but it is larger bites. |

currently Sophie is on Royal Canin and turning her nose up to it. So here's what I did. I took a list of 7 foods to my local Pet Value (Pet Smart didn't carry one of these foods) and asked for samples. Many of the "higher end" foods do come in sample bags for free but one of them I did get a bag for $1.99 bags. I am now letting Sophie try the first one, Merrick Puppy Plate. She seems to be fine with it and enjoying it. I may never get to the other 4 or so that I have, but that's ok. I'll keep them as "treats". :D I'm a bit leary with the high protein content of Orijen and although on my original list of 7 I did not take home a sample of it. As someone else posted, I too am not an expert on dogs, or dog food, however; the reading I've done so far regarding Yorkie diet has said a 28% protein food. Of course, at puppy stage a bit higher is ok. Again, it's not gospel nor is it necessarily the route for you to take with your puppy. I thought I'd share what I'm trying and see if you can gather any valuable information from it. :D |

I must have missed the Wellness thread too. What was the trouble? The only place I can get Innova here in Lebanon is from one of the Vets in town. I brought home from Pet Value: 1. Solid Gold Barking at the Moon 2. Natural Balance (they didn't have sample so I got Sweet Potatoe/Salmon Treats) Sophie LOVES these and they do have a food flavor the same. The nice thing about this one is puppy eats the same food as adult. So there is no switching when they go from puppy to adult. 3. Taste of the Wild ( 3 different flavors) 4 Merrick Puppy Plate 5. Dick Van Patton Chicken Soup |
I was also feeding my 3 yorkies Royal Canine until I started doing my research. I also chose Orijen for my pups and a new one I had on the way. They all just went crazy over the food. They still go crazy when I put more into their bowls. They also get Halo Chicken dry treats and they love it as well. They don't sell Orijen at Petsmart you have to get it at a specialty dog store. Here in Miami Dog Bar has it. But you can also order it online and they have coupons :) |
Wellness and Innova are both nice brands. Innova has a puppy food, as well as small bites...the EVO is an all life stages kibble and is a high protein grain-free diet. The EVO small bites kibbles are very small and would be fine for a puppy. Wellness has a puppy formula and also a small breed formula, but if you've decided against that brand and want to try Innova, I'd recommend you try either the EVO small bites or their puppy formula. You can try contacting the company to see if they'll send you a free sample, so you can try it out before purchasing a whole bag. Then if your baby doesn't like it, you're not out a whole bag of food. I hardly feed canned food, so I don't know what's out there. Hope that helps. :) |
Ask for free samples: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...e-samples.html I read somewhere that the fish formula for Wellness has a fish bone in it? Is that why you want to switch? The other formulas should be fine. It is best to feed Yorkies kibble...good for their teeth. Canned food also causes bad breath. I don't know why your vet would recommend canned food. Maybe cause your pup is teething? I would just moisten the kibble w/a little water. Never liked canned food. IMO. |
