Double canine teeth Our Douglas (7 months old) has got an extra set of lower canines all of a sudden. This really looks weird. I have never seen that on any other dogs. I'm wondering if his adult canines have come in before the baby canines have fallen out. Anyone have any ideas? Man, I can just see the orthodonitist bills when he goes into braces!!!!!!!:confused: |
You're right - his adults have come in and his babies haven't fallen out yet. Yorkies are notorious for having to have retained baby teeth pulled if they don't eventually come out on their own. Just keep an eye on them to make sure he does loose them all eventually! :) I sympathize with you, though. I nearly screamed when I saw Murphy's double row of for the first time. Talk about freakin!! :eek: |
Thanks for the speedy reply. Do I need to panic yet? How long do you think would be reasonable for me to watch this before I need to get him to a vet? He has lost some teeth already, as we have found three in the house. Lord knows how many he may have lost out doors or swallowed. Those are the only ones that look like he's from outer space, though.:eek: |
I think if the adults have already come in the baby ones don't come out on their own anymore, but I'm not sure. usually the vet will take them out when they do a spay/neuter. has he been neutered yet? |
That happened to cash and his baby teeth eventually fell out with no problems. |
I've Had The Same Issue... ...but he has a few double teeth. I was told that the baby teeth would fall out, but they haven't yet. I also was told that I should get them pulled, but haven't yet. I had to go to the Vet earlier today and I brought that issue up to them again. She told me that by now they should of fell out. If I don't get them pulled, in time the teeth will rot. I am thinking about it, as I have in the past. I had a bad experience with a cat when he went under anesthesia, and that is my fear once again. Long story short, I had to put him to sleep. |
My little Teddy just had his neutering 2 weeks ago and 6 baby teeth were pulled at that time. He feels so much better! He even brushes his own teeth now with the electric toothbrush and he had no interest before when he had double rows of teeth and looked like a piranha! Get them pulled, your dog will be happier for it and save you lots on those orthodontic bills you mentioned. :) |

Wow! Everybody has been so great. Douglas was neutered about a month ago and the vet's tech said that they would pull all his baby teeth at that time. Wife and I freaked. He eats Flint River Ranch kibble and needs teeth! Most of his adult teeth hadn't come in by then, se we didn't have it done. Now, with all your advice we will monitor him for a few months and if the baby teeth haven't fallen out, we'll have the vet remove what needs to be removed. Again, although he looks a little weird, he's still Douglas, and we appreciate everyone's replies and advice. Yorkies rule! :thumbs up |
Puppy Teeth - My 7 mo old appears to also have dual upper canines. I may take her to the vet for clarification. |
Hi. The vet did pull those extra baby canine teeth when we had Douglas neutered. There wasn't any problem, either. He started eating his kibble right away. It's as if he never even noticed that they had pulled those teeth. Good luck with your sweetie. |
To Pull or Not to Pulll?????? ELSOL, just wondering if your Yorkie ever lost those extra canines? My Gabi is 11 months and still has double upper canines. I am very annoyed at the Vet because I specifically requested all her baby teeth to be extracted at the time she was spayed. I actually pulled out two on my own afterwards. However, these upper canines are hanging in for good it seems. Guess it won't hurt as long as they look healthy. :aimeeyork |
Don't worry. Judging from all the post on the subject it's kind of normal for a Yorkie to have a double set of canines. As I said before, Douglas had his pulled out at the time he got his pockets picked (neutered). He didn't even seem to notice his baby teeth missing and went right to eating his kibble as if nothing happened. Of course he was probably occcupied with wondering why he as in a "baby one-sie". I'm having the same problem with my Bentley. He's 6 and a half months old and has seemed to lost all baby teeth except his upper canines. His big canines have come in directly behind his baby teeth and both sets are just sitting there. We already got him neutered and the vet told us to wait on pulpit (this was 3 weeks ago) because they looked as though they may come out on their own at that time. But how he's starting to not eat as much as fast but we can't tell if it's bothering him or if he's tired of the food.I'm interested to hear what you figure out - the 2nd vet we asked said to wait till he is one year and gets a dental cleaning to pull them. |
