diet question! Is it healthy or is there a healthy way for your Yorkie to be vegetarian? |
It is possible but all dogs may not thrive on a veg diet. A pescatarian or ovo-vegetarian diet seems like a much better way to go to me. Natural Balance does make a vegetarian food but it may just be for adults and not pups also. Purina HA is also vegetarian I think, but it is an rx food. |
Okay I will try those out thank you! I just hate that I'm feeding them meat makes me sick haha. Are those food still high in protein? |

I could try the fish based diet. I would love to do all home cooking for them but I would never have the time. :( |
If you don't mind me asking - WHY? lol. Why do you want to deprive your dogs of meat? Especially if it's in dog food form and you wouldn't even know there's meat in there? Dogs are meat-eaters... why make them eat only veggies if they don't have to? |
Dogs are basically carnivores and really need the meat to thrive. There are some vegetarian dog foods out there but I wouldn't trust them. I feel dogs need meat proteins. |
I guess it just makes me sick to know their eating animals. I know it can sound a little insane on my part. |
A little ;) I don't know of any dog on veggie food, expect for the one in 7 Pounds with Will Smith. Before then I never would have thought about it. Good to see another Calgarian on the board! :) |
Haha yes I knew it would. My bf thinks im crazy about it to. I guess its something I shouldn't obsess over. And yes same to you! |
i don't think you should make your dogs not eat meat just because you don't. Dogs are carnivores and need meat to survive. Unless there is a medical need, i don't think dogs should be deprived of something they have eaten since their first existence on earth. However if you are stuck on this idea of making them vegetarian there are some commercial foods out there like natural balance that make vegetarian diets. If you are going to home cook for them i suggest you ask a nutritionist because it can be very dangerous. there are vitamins and minerals in meats that are not in veggies that you will need to supplement in their new diets. bad things can happen if their diet is lacking. |
Protein is essential for dogs. Amino acids(the building blocks of proteins) are either manufactured by the body, or must be found in the diet. Those that must be found in our diet are called the essential amino acids. A complete protein is one that contains all the essential amino acids. ALL animal proteins are complete proteins. In order to derive a complete protein from plants, they must be eaten in specific combinations ; such as beans and nuts, beans and certain grains like quinoa, or split peas and whole grain breads. It can be done but there are ramifications of not getting the correct balance. Issues with their skin, nails, hair, as well as effects on their immune system. Not to mention that the carbohydrate increase may cause significant weight gain. Extra protein is flushed through the body by way of the kidneys, however, extra carbohydrates are converted into fat and stored. Why take a chance? Feed them what they need. |
