Looking for recipes for low blood sugar
 
I don't know why we are having such a hard time with low blood sugar. Once the puppies reach 12 weeks they seem to out grow the episodes.

What we have been doing is: when we first find the puppy, get some karo syrup or Dine in him. Keep the puppy in motion to keep circulation of blood and respiration going. If the puppy is not more alert in about 15 minutes, we give another dose of karo or Dine. If the puppy is not having any problem swallowing, we mix the karo or Dine with pedialyte and feed that to him with a syringe. When the puppy is alert enough to eat, we feed him baby food chicken or if he won't eat that, we offer braunswagger. Usually within a few hours the puppy has responded and is fine. Once a puppy has had low blood sugar we keep a close eye on him to catch any further episodes at it's earliest stage.

I don't know if I don't hear about other puppies going down because the breeders don't talk about it or if for some reason their puppies don't go down as often as mine do.

I would like to have some recipes or foods that people use for when their puppies or dogs go down with low blood sugar. Please share. Sylvia

Sorry to hear that you are continually having issues with low blood sugars.
Have you had the babies checked to make sure that it is low blood sugars and not something else. Possibly even not enough calcium. Wish I could be more help but have never had any problems with our litters, in that way.

Yes, we have. With the last one, I had the thought that maybe his potassium was low but he died before we could do anything more for him. I have calcium here but it didn't look like he needed it. I was afraid to over medicate him. Sylvia

Is it all your litters, or just those from certain parents?

Ummm, from the same line. Mostly when the puppies are going to be 3 lbs or less as adults. It's a pretty good sign when they go down with low blood sugar but it is not every one that goes down. The lady I got my dogs from never seemed to have any problems with low blood sugar but then again, if she did, she never would have told me. Sylvia

I think it is your lines. And the fact that your babies are so tiny. I have had a few that were charting to be 3-4 pounds, but they were out of healthy 4 and 8 pound parents. It sounds to me that your lines have been downbred too much and the offspring are suffering. This is just my opinion, but I would retire those lines.

I am thinking it might be the lines too. I don't know where the lady I got my 2 males and 2 females from got their parents but my males are brothers from different litters and the girls are sisters from different litters but they are all half siblings. It doesn't seem to matter who I breed the boys to, I can breed them to my 11 lb female from another line and she will throw a tiny, tiny puppy. At the same time the rest of the litter will be a mix of sizes. None usually get as big as the mama. Sylvia

I've had that happen twice. And both times it was because the puppy didn't know how to eat. They were from large litters and when it came feeding time they must have been pushed away. When mom dried up, they weren't eating enough on their own and their sugar went down. Once I taught them how to eat properly, they were fine.

I would also have to think that it's possibly your lines. Have you had your adults tested for LS?

No, not yet. That used to have a very low priority for me as the lady I got them from knew the lines for 5 generations and had no knowledge of any reports of LS. It is very possible these babies were pushed away from the food as they were the smallest but I free feed so there was always food down. Because of the tiny ones, I wet the kibble to make it soft enough they can get it into their mouths. Sylvia
